Hiroshima Carp vs Hanshin Tigers

Hanshin struck first. In the top of the 1st, Fabian launched a two-run home run to left field off Saito — his 29th of the season — to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.

Hiroshima answered immediately in the bottom half. A successful challenge by manager Arai overturned a force-out call at second base, keeping the inning alive. The rally produced one run, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

The Carp seized control in the 3rd. Montero grounded out to second base, but the runner scored from third to tie the game at 2-2. Moments later, a softly-hit ball dropped in front of left field, allowing Kikuchi to score from third to put Hiroshima ahead 3-2.

Saito settled in after the rocky first, retiring batters in order in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th frames. He also collected his first career hit — a moment the home crowd celebrated.

Hiroshima padded the lead in the 6th. Okamoto crushed a solo home run, his 15th of the season, and the Carp added another run to make it 5-2.

Daisuke Morikura closed the door with three clean innings, retiring all nine batters he faced.

Saito's ability to hold the Tigers scoreless after the first inning flipped the match. After Fabian's two-run blast, Hanshin managed only four more hits and never advanced a runner past second base. Saito pitched five innings, allowed two runs on scattered hits, and left with the lead — enough for his first professional win.

Hiroshima out-hit Hanshin 10-6, but the gap in scoring was sharper than the hit count suggests. The Carp's three multi-run innings (1st, 3rd, 6th) reflected timely hitting after a challenge and a key error-free sequence. Hanshin's only run-scoring inning was the 1st; after that, the Tigers put zero pressure on the Hiroshima bullpen. The lone Hiroshima error proved harmless.

Hanshin remain atop the Central League at 58-46-1 (.558), but this loss tightens the margin. The Tigers lead the Yomiuri Giants by 2.0 games in the standings as of August 15, per NPB official data.

Hiroshima, anchored at the bottom of the CL at 40-57-4 (.412), have now won consecutive games at home. The Carp host the Tigers again on Sunday, August 16, in the final game of the series. Hanshin next travel to face the Yomiuri Giants on August 18.

A textbook turnaround: Saito absorbed the early punch, the Carp manufactured runs through small-ball and power, and the bullpen sealed it. Hanshin's inability to score after the 1st — against a pitcher making his first NPB win — is a concern for a team with pennant ambitions.
