Hiroshima Carp vs Hanshin Tigers

Hanshin struck immediately in the top of the first. Takumu Nakano singled to right off Hiroshima starter Shohei Mori, and Sato crushed a 1-1 pitch to centre for a two-run home run — his 28th of the season and fifth of the week — giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead before the Carp had a chance to bat.

The Tigers' starter Ryo Ihara made the early lead stand up. The right-hander worked five efficient innings, allowing just two hits and one run while striking out four and walking one. His only blemish came in the fifth, when Hiroshima's Montero led off with a solo home run to left, his 10th of the season, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

But that was as close as Hiroshima would get. Hanshin's bullpen took over in the sixth and held the Carp scoreless over the final four innings, with Kishino, Doris, Iwasaki and Oikawa combining for four innings of one-hit relief.

The Tigers put the game away with crooked numbers in the seventh, eighth and ninth. V. Fushimi delivered an RBI single to centre in the seventh, scoring Nakano. In the eighth, Sakamoto ripped a two-run double down the left-field line, scoring Sato and Takatera. The ninth saw Ohyama rope an RBI single to centre, and Sakamoto added a sacrifice fly for the final 8-1 margin.

Sato's first-inning two-run homer was the decisive blow. It came on a 1-1 count and gave the Tigers immediate control. Hiroshima's starter Mori had allowed a leadoff single to Nakano, and Sato made him pay. The blast meant Hiroshima were chasing from the outset, and the Carp — who managed only three hits all night — never had the firepower to catch up.

Hanshin out-hit Hiroshima 13-3, the widest hit disparity in this fixture since 2024. Tigers hurlers held the Carp to just three hits — a triple by Kozono in the third, a single by Kikuchi in the ninth, and Montero's solo homer — while striking out nine. Hanshin's five-man pitching staff threw 144 pitches, with starter Ihara accounting for 84. Hiroshima's pitchers needed 142 pitches to record 27 outs but allowed 13 hits. The Carp defence committed one error, while the Tigers played error-free baseball.

The 13-3 hit disparity is especially stark given that Hanshin managed only six hits in Friday's game. The turnaround was powered by the top of the order: Nakano, Sato and Ohyama combined for five hits, four runs and three RBI.

The win keeps Hanshin Tigers in the thick of the Central League pennant race at 59-46-1. Hiroshima Carp drop to 40-58-4, anchored at the bottom of the Central League standings. The 18th meeting between these sides this season gave Hanshin a 33-16-1 edge in the season series.

Hanshin have now won nine consecutive Sunday matches — a remarkable run of weekend dominance. The Tigers also snapped a two-game losing streak in this series, having dropped the first two games of the three-game set.

A clinical Tigers performance. Sato's early home run provided the cushion, Ihara's steady pitching kept Hiroshima at bay, and the bullpen shut the door emphatically. For Hiroshima, plating one run on three hits against a team they'd beaten twice in a row tells a stark story of offensive regression.
