Yokohama BayStars vs Yomiuri Giants

The Giants finally pulled level in the eighth against BayStars reliever J. Luis. Pinch-hitter Sasahara Kaito singled, was bunted to second by Urata, and Sasaki Shunsuke ripped a run-scoring double to left-centre that made it 3-3.

BayStars closer S. Reynolds stranded the go-ahead run at third by striking out cleanup hitter Dalbec — the fourth K of the night for the slugger — and Oshiro Takumi to end the top of the eighth.

That set the stage for the ninth. With Giants reliever Tanaka Akito on the mound, Watarai flew out to open the frame. Player of the Match: Ogata Takato — dominated seven innings, and his performance made the late rally possible.

Both teams finished with seven hits, but the underlying story was pitching. Giants starter Yamasaki Iori (5 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 4 BB, 4 K) was below his career standard against this opponent (he entered 14-4 with a 2.23 ERA lifetime vs DeNA), issuing four walks that directly led to three early runs. Ogata issued just one free pass across seven innings and consistently pitched ahead in counts. The Giants' bullpen (Akahoshi, Nakagawa) held the line through the sixth, seventh and eighth, but Tanaka Akito could not find the strike zone in the ninth, walking two and hitting a batter among the six men he faced.

A classic NPB duel between two quality starting pitchers turned on a ninth-inning bullpen meltdown. Ogata deserved a win for his seven innings of controlled pitching; Tanaka's inability to throw strikes gifted Yokohama the bases, and Miyashita punished him. The three-game series is perfectly set for a rubber match.
