Takeoka's solo homer in the top of the third, coming immediately after Sakamoto's opener, was the pivotal moment. Shimomura (1-2) had cruised through the first two innings with three strikeouts, but the 23-year-old right-hander lost his grip after the blast. He lasted 5.2 innings, allowing five hits, four earned runs, three walks and six strikeouts on 102 pitches.

Yakult's sixth-inning barrage turned a tight game into a comfortable lead. The three-run frame came on just two hits — both doubles — and exposed Hanshin's inability to limit damage with runners in scoring position.

The left-hander delivered his best outing of the second half, scattering nine Tigers hits without ever letting the game slip away. He worked out of jams in the first, fourth and fifth innings with timely strikeouts, holding Hanshin's dangerous 3-4-5 hitters — Sato, Oyama and Morishita — to a combined 1-for-10.
• Noboru Shimizu (Yakult, SV 3): A clean ninth inning with one strikeout, his third save of the campaign.
• Soma Uchiyama (Yakult): 1-for-4, two-RBI double that broke the tie. His hit was the decisive blow of the night.
• Seijiro Sakamoto (Hanshin): 2-for-4, solo home run (No. 7). The only Tigers run of the evening.
• Shota Morishita (Hanshin): 3-for-4 with three singles, the only multi-hit performance for the home side.

Despite the lopsided scoreline, Hanshin out-hit Yakult 9-7 — a textbook case of missed opportunities. The Tigers stranded 11 runners and went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position. Yakult, by contrast, drove in four runs from five hits with RISP, capitalising on both doubles in the decisive sixth.

Takahashi's control told the story: one walk against five strikeouts across seven innings, a strike-to-ball ratio that kept Hanshin's attack off balance. He threw first-pitch strikes to 20 of 32 batters faced.

Shimomura's line — 5.2 IP, 4 ER — undersells his early dominance but accurately reflects his inability to finish innings. Yakult put the first two batters on base in both the third and sixth, and Shimomura paid for every mistake.

Hanshin (58-47-1) remain top of the Central League but failed to gain ground on the second-placed Yomiuri Giants. A three-game series with the Chunichi Dragons awaits on 21 August (11:00, Kyocera Dome).

Yakult (49-55-1) vaulted past Yokohama DeNA into outright third, now level on games with BayStars but holding the tiebreaker. They visit the Yomiuri Giants on 21 August (11:00, Tokyo Dome).

The win was especially valuable after Yakult had lost three of their previous four and watched Hanshin steal back-to-back walk-off wins on 18-19 August.

Yakult produced the most efficient performance of this series, turning seven hits into four runs while Takahashi dominated exactly when his team needed him most. Hanshin's inability to convert baserunners into runs — a recurring issue in close games — cost them against a starter they should have knocked around. If the Tigers want to hold off the Giants down the stretch, the bats must deliver with runners on base.
