Chunichi Dragons vs Hanshin Tigers

The game was scoreless through three innings as starters Daiki Ono (Chunichi) and Yū Nishi (Hanshin) traded zeroes. Hanshin had the best early chance in the second, loading the bases with two out, but Ono escaped when Nishi lined out sharply to shortstop.

But Matsuyama induced a groundout from Chikamoto with two on to end the game and earn his second save of the year.

The momentum belonged to Hanshin early. They put two runners on in the first, loaded the bases in the second, and stranded two more in the third — but Ono kept them scoreless with five strikeouts across his five innings. When Uebayashi broke the deadlock in the fourth, it punished Hanshin's inability to convert early traffic. The Tigers went 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position; the Dragons were 1-for-5 and needed only two swings to produce four runs.

Orlando Sanō (Chunichi) — 1-for-4, HR, 2 RBI. The Dominican slugger made the Tigers pay for walking Hosokawa ahead of him in the sixth, punishing a first-pitch fastball.

Yūki Oyama (Hanshin) — 1-for-3, HR, RBI, BB. Oyama's solo homer in the sixth was his 18th of the season and briefly gave Hanshin hope, but the Tigers could not build on it.

Player of the match: Daiki Ono — The left-hander navigated relentless Hanshin traffic with composure, setting the table for the Dragons' power swings.

Hanshin out-hit Chunichi 9–7 but left nine runners on base. The Dragons' two home runs accounted for all four of their runs, while Hanshin managed only one extra-base hit (Oyama's homer). On the mound, Hanshin's starters and relievers each allowed two earned runs, but Nishi's four walks contributed to the pitch count that forced his early hook. Matsuyama's ninth inning (3 H, 1 ER in 1 IP) was shakier than the final margin suggests, yet the save opportunity never truly felt in doubt once Sanō made it 4–1.

Hanshin (62–48–1) remain first in the Central League but saw their lead over Yomiuri Giants (60–50–2) potentially shrink. For Hanshin, every game matters with the pennant race entering its final six weeks. Chunichi (49–65–1) stay fifth, 16 games back, but can take encouragement from a second consecutive head-to-head win over the league leaders — they also beat Hanshin 3–2 on 7 August.

Both teams return to the same opponent at Vantelin Dome on Wednesday 26 August (10:00 JST / 01:00 UTC). Hanshin will send their ace to the mound looking to square the series, while Chunichi aim to build on their recent momentum.

A tidy, efficient win from Chunichi, built on Ono's composure under early pressure and two swings of the bat. Hanshin had chances — nine hits and nine left on base tells the story — but the Tigers lacked the clutch hit when it mattered. For a Dragons team with little to play for beyond pride, beating the league leaders twice in three weeks sends a message.
