Seibu Lions vs Nippon Ham Fighters

The game remained scoreless through four innings as both starters — Taira and Hiromi Ito — traded zeroes. Seibu broke through in the bottom of the fifth when second baseman Keisuke Nakada lashed a two-out, bases-clearing triple to right-centre off Ito (6 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 5 K, 3 BB). The hit, on a 2-1 fastball, scored Sosuke Genda, Shuichiro Kishi and Kojima, who had loaded the bases on a single, a walk and a single.

Seibu added a run in the sixth on a Nakada sacrifice fly that plated Genda, making it 3-0. The Lions carried that lead into the eighth.

Nippon Ham finally broke through in the top of the eighth against reliever Jacob Wingenbach. Seiya Kiyomiya crushed his 14th home run of the season — a solo shot to right field — to cut the deficit to 3-1. But Wingenbach limited further damage by stranding two runners after the homer.

Kaito Kaibeno worked a clean ninth for his 18th save, retiring the side in order on 11 pitches.

The bottom of the fifth proved decisive. Ito had cruised through four scoreless frames on 63 pitches, but the Lions strung together three hits and a walk to load the bases. Nakada's triple — his first of the season — broke the game open on a 2-1 delivery. The Fighters never pulled closer than two runs.

Kaima Taira (Seibu) — The right-hander delivered a masterclass: 7 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 9 K, 1 BB on 105 pitches. He improved to 10-3 and lowered his ERA to 1.46, cementing himself as one of the Pacific League's premier starters this season.

Keisuke Nakada (Seibu) — The second baseman went 2-for-3 with three RBI, accounting for all of Seibu's run production. His fifth-inning triple was the decisive blow.

Seiya Kiyomiya (Nippon Ham) — The first baseman provided the Fighters' only run with his 14th home run of the year in the eighth. He finished 1-for-5.

Seibu out-hit Nippon Ham 10-8 but the gap in damage was wider than the count suggests. The Lions went 2-for-7 with runners in scoring position, while the Fighters managed just 1-for-8 and left nine men on base. Taira's nine strikeouts were critical — he fanned at least one batter in every inning from the first through the seventh, repeatedly killing Fighters rallies. Nippon Ham's bullpen held (2 IP, 1 ER), but Ito's six-inning, two-run outing was not enough against Seibu's ace.

Seibu (65-48-3, .575) moved to 6.5 games behind league-leading Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks and two games clear of the Fighters in the race for the second Pacific League playoff berth. Nippon Ham (63-52-1, .553) slipped to 8.5 games back of the Hawks. Both teams posted identical 14-4 interleague records, but in Pacific League play Seibu's pitching depth has given them the edge in head-to-head meetings down the stretch.
