Seibu Lions vs Nippon Ham Fighters

Watanabe retired the side in order in the fifth, but the Fighters ambushed him again in the sixth. Shortstop Otsuka led off with a two-run homer to right — his fifth of the year — making it 6-1. Gunji singled, and after Yoshida struck out, Hosokawa and Mizutani strung together consecutive singles to load the bases again.

Kiyomiya stepped in and crushed a three-run homer to right-centre, his 15th of the season, stretching the lead to 9-1. Watanabe was lifted after Kiyomiya's blast, charged with nine runs (eight earned) on 10 hits over five-plus innings.

Tatsu took it from there, retiring 10 of the final 11 batters he faced to close out his second complete game of the season.

Watanabe entered the sixth at 83 pitches and in control after a clean fifth. But Otsuka's lead-off homer on a 1-0 fastball flipped the inning's momentum instantly. The Fighters sent nine men to the plate before Watanabe recorded a single out in the inning, and the game was effectively over.

• Kotaro Kiyomiya (Nippon Ham): 2-for-5, 4 RBI, one single, one three-run homer (No. 15), one strikeout. Drove in runs in both the third and sixth innings.
• Kengo Yoshida (Nippon Ham): 2-for-4, 3 RBI, one triple, two strikeouts. His bases-clearing triple in the fourth was the biggest single swing before the late homers.
• Alexander Canario (Seibu): 1-for-4, solo HR (No. 12), 1 RBI, 2 strikeouts. Provided Seibu's only offence with his solo shot in the third.

Player of the match: Kota Tatsu. A commanding complete game on 131 pitches with 10 strikeouts and only one walk.

The Fighters out-hit the Lions 10-6 but the damage ran deeper than the raw count suggests. Nippon Ham's 4-for-12 with runners in scoring position contrasted sharply with Seibu's 0-for-5. Two Seibu errors (one by third baseman Watanabe on a routine grounder in the fourth, one on a bunt in the third) directly led to four unearned runs. Tatsu struck out 10 Lions while issuing exactly one walk, a 10:1 K:BB ratio that defined his dominance. Watanabe's counterpart line — 5+ IP, 10 H, 9 R, 8 ER — was his worst outing since late June.

The Fighters improved to 64-51-1 and closed within 1.5 games of the second-placed Lions in the Pacific League, pending other results. Seibu dropped to 64-49-3. With roughly 20 games remaining in the regular season, the race for the second playoff spot behind SoftBank Hawks is tightening. Nippon Ham next face the Chiba Lotte Marines on 27 August, while Seibu continue their homestand against the Orix Buffaloes on the same date.

A relentless Fighters lineup punished every Seibu mistake — two defensive errors, a starter who lost his command in the sixth — and Tatsu made sure there was no way back. Nippon Ham's offence has now scored nine or more runs in three of their last eight games, and with their pitching settling behind Tatsu's resurgence, they look like the Pacific League's form team heading into September.
