Chiba Lotte Marines vs Fukuoka S. Hawks

With SoftBank still leading 5-3 entering the bottom of the ninth, manager Hiroshi Kokubo summoned left-hander Sugiyama to close it out after Matsumoto had struck out the side in a clean eighth. Sugiyama retired Soto on a pop-up to first, then walked Ogawa. Pinch-hitter Yasuda lined a double down the right-field line, putting runners at second and third with one out. Ueda struck out swinging for the second out, bringing up pinch-hitter Shogo Yamamoto.

Sugiyama fell behind 2-0 to Yamamoto, who laced a two-run single up the middle to score both runners and knot the game at 5-5.

Yuki Yanagita (Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks) — 3-for-3 with a double, two walks and two RBI. The veteran designated hitter was the catalyst for SoftBank's five-run first, driving the two-run double that broke the game open.

Toshiya Sato (Chiba Lotte Marines) — 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. The catcher delivered the key hit in the third-inning rally and was a steady presence behind the plate working through seven Lotte pitchers.

Shogo Yamamoto (Chiba Lotte Marines) — 1-for-1, 2 RBI as a pinch-hitter. His two-out, two-run single in the ninth was the decisive blow that completed Lotte's comeback.

Kōki Uwasawa (Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks) — 6.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R (2 ER), 1 BB, 5 K. The right-hander settled effectively after a tough first inning, but took a no-decision when the bullpen could not hold the lead.

Player of the Match: Yuki Yanagita — his three-hit, two-RBI night set the tone and he reached base in all five plate appearances.

Both teams finished with eight hits and no home runs. SoftBank's five-run first inning accounted for all of their offensive output; after the first, Lotte's bullpen held them to three hits over the final eight innings. Lotte scored in three separate innings (first, third, ninth) reflecting bursts rather than sustained pressure — they managed just one hit from the second through eighth combined. SoftBank committed the game's only error, which led to an unearned run in the first.

SoftBank (69-40-3 after the tie) remain firmly atop the Pacific League with a .633 winning percentage, holding a 6.5-game lead over second-place Seibu as of 22 August. Lotte (50-55-4) stay in fifth place, 17 games back. The tie meant neither side gained ground in the standings, though Lotte extended their modest unbeaten run in home games against top-half opposition after losing 9-0 the previous night.

Both teams play again at ZOZO Marine Stadium on Thursday, 27 August, with SoftBank sending a rested rotation arm against Lotte in Game 20 of the season series. Lotte then travel to Es Con Field Hokkaido to face Nippon-Ham on Friday, 28 August.

A classic NPB pitchers' duel after the initial fireworks — Lotte's bullpen, which used seven pitchers, deserves particular credit for holding the league's best offence scoreless over the final eight innings. SoftBank will rue the missed opportunity to widen their cushion, while Lotte showed the fight that has kept them competitive despite a losing record. The series continues Thursday with both teams searching for a decisive win.
