Orix Buffaloes vs Rakuten Gold. Eagles

Rakuten struck first in the opening frame. Nakajima led off with a double to right, advanced to third on Tatsumi's walk and a Muneyama groundout, and scored when McCusker lined a two-out RBI single to right. A 1–0 lead after one against Orix starter Jerry (3–8).

The third inning was anything but routine. Jerry recorded only one out before being pulled. The rally:

• Nakajima drew a lead-off walk
• Tatsumi flew out to left
• Muneyama doubled to right-centre
• McCusker walked to load the bases
• Murabayashi singled to right, scoring the first run of the inning — 2–0
• YG Yasuda doubled to right-centre, scoring two — 4–0
• Ota singled to left — 5–0
• Kurokawa doubled down the left-field line, scoring two — 7–0
• Nakajima (batting again) singled, scoring Ota — 8–0, but Kurokawa was thrown out at home
• Tatsumi (batting again) singled to centre, scoring two — 10–0
• Muneyama singled to right

Reliever Gonda finally ended the frame. The damage: nine runs, eight hits, three walks, three doubles, four singles. Jerry's line: 2⅔ IP, 8 H, 9 R (8 ER), 3 BB, 2 K.

McCusker crushed his 20th home run of the season in the sixth — a solo shot to left-centre off Gonda — extending the lead to 11–0.

Orix got on the board in the bottom of the sixth. Mugitani singled, Hori reached on a strikeout that escaped the catcher, and after Watanabe grounded out, Nishikawa drove in a run with a groundout. Kureida followed with an RBI single to right, making it 11–2.

In the eighth, Kureida singled and Ota doubled before So ripped a two-run single to left, cutting the deficit to 11–4. But Kurokawa answered in the ninth with an RBI single that scored pinch-runner Yang, restoring the 12–4 margin.

The nine-run third inning decided the game inside 30 minutes. Rakuten sent 12 men to the plate; every starter except Yoshina contributed a hit or a run. Five of the nine runs scored with two outs. Jerry was charged with eight earned runs, his shortest outing of the season.

Carson McCusker (Rakuten DH) — Player of the Match. 3-for-4, double, solo home run (20th), three RBIs, two runs, one walk. Opened the scoring with a two-out RBI single in the first and hit his team-leading 20th homer in the sixth.

Maeda Ken (Rakuten SP) — Winning pitcher. 6 IP, 3 H, 2 R (0 earned), 1 BB, 7 K, 99 pitches. Did not allow an earned run over six efficient frames. Improved to 4–4.

Nakajima (Rakuten LF) — 2-for-3, double, three runs, three walks. Reached base five times from the lead-off spot and scored three of Rakuten's 12 runs.

YG Yasuda (Rakuten 1B) — 2-for-5, double, two RBIs. His two-run double in the third stretched the lead from 2–0 to 4–0.

So (Orix 3B) — 2-for-4, two-run single in the eighth. Provided half of Orix's RBIs.

Rakuten out-hit Orix 15–9 and went 7-for-15 with runners in scoring position against Orix's 2-for-9. The Eagles drew six walks against two from Orix and struck out six times to Orix's 10 — disciplined at-bats that kept pressure on every Orix pitcher. The starting-pitching gulf was decisive: Maeda delivered six scoreless frames with seven strikeouts; Jerry was pulled before recording four outs in the third, taking his eighth loss against three wins.

Rakuten (sixth in the Pacific League) levelled this three-game series at one win apiece, having also won the opener 5–1 on 26 August. The finale is scheduled for 28 August at Kyocera Dome. For Orix (fourth), Jerry is winless in his last seven starts, and the Buffaloes have lost four of their last five overall.

A nine-run inning is a rarity in any league, and Rakuten's relentless third frame was as complete an offensive explosion as the Eagles have produced all season. Maeda's command and McCusker's power provided the perfect complement. Orix's pitching staff had no answer; their four-run fightback was cosmetic. The margin was fully justified.
