Seibu Lions vs Rakuten Gold. Eagles

The Lions struck first and decisively. With two on and one out in the bottom of the first, Lin An-ko crushed a 3-0 pitch from Rakuten starter Ryota Takanaka into the right-field seats for his seventh home run of the season, giving Seibu a 3-0 lead after one.

Seibu extended the lead in the third. Kojima singled to center and Shinya Hasegawa followed with a single to left. After Tyler Nevin walked to load the bases, Lin ripped a two-run single to left-centre, making it 5-0. Kojima and Hasegawa scored on the play.

Rakuten finally broke through in the fifth. Ryosuke Tatsumi launched a three-run homer to right-centre off Seibu starter Kona Takahashi — his 11th of the season — cutting the deficit to 5-4. Takahashi surrendered four consecutive hits to open the inning but settled, finishing the frame without further damage.

The Lions answered in the seventh. Alexander Canario and Kojima drew walks, Hasegawa lined a two-run single to right, and Nevin walked to load the bases again. Seibu added a run in the eighth when Canario drew a bases-loaded walk, pushing the final margin to 8-4.

Lin's three-run homer in the first inning on a 3-0 count was the decisive blow. It forced Takanaka and the Eagles to pitch from behind from the opening frame against a Lions team that has now won 12 of 20 meetings this season. Rakuten never led at any point.

• Lin An-ko, Seibu: 2-for-4, HR (7), 5 RBI. The Taiwanese outfielder's first-inning blast set the tone on a 3-0 count, and his third-inning single stretched the lead to 5-0. He accounted for more than half of Seibu's run production.
• Shinya Hasegawa, Seibu: 3-for-5, 2 RBI, 2 runs. Returned from injury to record a three-hit game from the No. 3 spot, delivering key insurance runs with a two-run single in the seventh.
• Kona Takahashi, Seibu (W, 9-5): 6.2 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 4 BB, 10 K, 120 pitches. Overcame his lone rocky inning in the fifth to record his ninth win. His 10 strikeouts held the Eagles at bay through the middle innings.
• Ryosuke Tatsumi, Rakuten: 1-for-4, HR (11), 3 RBI. His fifth-inning blast briefly gave the Eagles life at 5-4, but the Lions bullpen shut the door from there.

Seibu out-hit Rakuten 9-5 but the distribution tells the story. The Lions scored in four different innings (1st, 3rd, 7th, 8th) while Rakuten's entire offensive output came in one frame — Tatsumi's three-run homer in the fifth. Both teams played errorless defence.

Seibu drew seven walks to Rakuten's six, with Canario and Nevin each working two free passes. Lin's five RBI came on just two hits, showing the Lions' ability to capitalise with runners on base. Four of Seibu's nine hits went for extra bases (Lin's home run, Watanabe's double, and Hasegawa's two singles driving in runs).

Seibu's bullpen trio of Sato Shunsuke (0.1 IP), Shinohara Hibiki (1.0 IP, 1 K) and Mameda Taishi (1.0 IP) combined for 2.1 scoreless innings on 31 pitches, preserving Takahashi's win.

Rakuten starter Takanaka (5-7) was charged with six earned runs on six hits over six innings, striking out only two. His ERA rose to 3.35. Rakuten's McCusker struck out in all four of his at-bats.

The Lions improved to 66-49-3, maintaining their hold on second place in the Pacific League, 6.5 games behind SoftBank Hawks. Rakuten dropped to 45-68-1, anchored in sixth place. Seibu have now won four consecutive meetings against Rakuten and lead the season series 12-7-1 with no further games scheduled between the clubs after this 20-game set. The Lions return to action at Belluna Dome on August 29 against the Eagles. Rakuten travel to face Orix Buffaloes on the same date.

A game decided by Lin's first-inning blast and Seibu's relentless patience at the plate. The Lions drew walks, strung together timely hits, and got a shutdown bullpen performance after Rakuten's lone rally. For an Eagles side that has now lost 23 more games than it has won, there were few answers once Seibu jumped ahead early.
