Hanshin Tigers vs Yomiuri Giants

The game was scoreless through three innings as Otake and Giants starter Masahiro Tanaka traded zeroes. Yomiuri threatened first in the top of the 1st, putting runners on the corners with two outs after singles by Shunsuke Sasaki and Bobby Dalbec, but Otake induced a groundout from catcher Takumi Ohshiro to escape.

Hanshin broke through in the bottom of the 4th. Teruaki Sato led off with a double down the right-field line. After Ohyama flew out, Nozomu Takatera was intentionally walked. Catcher Seijiro Sakamoto then lined a go-ahead RBI single to left-centre, scoring Sato. Takuya Motoyama followed with a two-out RBI single through the right side, making it 2–0.

An inning later, the Tigers stretched the lead. Koji Chikamoto doubled to right-centre, moved to third on Takumu Nakano's groundout, and scored on Ohyama's centre-field single. Hanshin added another run in the 7th on an RBI single by Sato.

Yomiuri got on the board in the 8th when Shunsuke Urata reached on an infield single and came home on a fielding error, but that was all they could manage. Yasunari Kudo worked a clean 9th for his seventh save.

Tanaka cruised through three innings on 35 pitches but lost command in the 4th. After Sato's leadoff double, Tanaka could not escape the two-out rally. The consecutive two-out hits by Sakamoto and Motoyama flipped a tight pitcher's duel decisively in Hanshin's favour and forced Giants manager Shinnosuke Abe to go to his bullpen earlier than planned.

• Kotaro Otake (Hanshin): W, 5–8. 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R (1 ER), 0 BB, 5 K on 103 pitches. Retired 13 of the last 14 batters he faced after the first-inning jam. The lefty lowered his ERA to 2.87.
• Seijiro Sakamoto (Hanshin): 1-for-4 with the go-ahead two-out RBI single in the 4th. The veteran catcher delivered the game's most important swing.
• Teruaki Sato (Hanshin): 2-for-3 with a double, a single, an RBI, a run scored and an intentional walk. His leadoff double in the 4th started the decisive rally.
• Masahiro Tanaka (Yomiuri): L, 3–4. 4+ IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 3 K. The 37-year-old veteran was sharp early but could not navigate the two-out damage in the 4th.

Hanshin out-hit Yomiuri 10–4 and held the Giants to just one extra-base hit (none after the 1st inning). The Tigers' 10 hits were spread across seven different batters, while Yomiuri managed only four singles. Tanaka threw 61 pitches through four-plus innings; his command faded in the 4th, which allowed Hanshin to stack three two-out hits. Otake threw first-pitch strikes to 18 of 25 batters, keeping the Giants off balance and inducing weak contact (eight groundouts to four flyouts).

The win improved Hanshin's season record against Yomiuri to 15–7 in the 22-game series and pushed the Tigers to 64–47–1 atop the Central League. The magic number of 23 means any combination of 23 Hanshin wins and Yomiuri losses (plus second-place implications) clinches the pennant. Yomiuri dropped to 60–51–2, 2.5 games back — but this series loss at Koshien is a significant dent in their title hopes with 20 games remaining.

Hanshin return to Koshien on Sunday 30 August for Game 3 of this series against the Giants. Yomiuri will send a yet-to-be-announced starter against a Tigers club that has won nine of its last 12.

A textbook Central League pitchers' duel decided by a single two-out rally. Otake was superb and the Tigers' lineup did just enough against Tanaka. The magic number is down to 23, and Hanshin are in firm control of the pennant race.
