Hiroshima Carp vs Yakult Swallows

Yakult struck in the first. Domingo Santana singled with one out and, after Yamada struck out, Tama Masuda lined a centre-field RBI single to open the scoring.

The Swallows broke it open in the fourth against Carp starter Hiroki Tamamura. Yamada led off with a single, Iwata singled, and Uchiyama loaded the bases with another single. Catcher Naoto Matsumoto then punched a two-run single through the left side for a 3-0 lead.

In the fifth, Yamada greeted reliever Okamoto by crushing a solo home run to centre — his first of the season — making it 4-0.

Hideki Nagaoka added an RBI single in the sixth, and Hiroshima answered in the bottom half when Osaki lifted a sacrifice fly to centre, plating Sasaki for the Carp's only run.

The seventh inning was a complete meltdown by the Hiroshima bullpen. Santana singled, Takeoka singled, and after Masuda struck out, Yakult loaded the bases on an intentional walk to Iwata. Uchiyama cleared them with a two-run single to centre. Two more runs scored on bases-loaded walks to Nagaoka and Akahane, pushing the lead to 9-1.

Yamada's fifth-inning solo homer off reliever Okamoto was the knockout blow. Hiroshima had just escaped with a 3-0 deficit through four innings despite walking five Carp batters, and Okamoto had a chance to keep the game within reach. Instead, Yamada — who had been mired in a power drought all season — deposited the first pitch he saw into the centre-field seats, and any hope of a Carp comeback evaporated.

Keiji Takahashi (Yakult) — Player of the Match. The left-hander allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out nine over five scoreless innings (108 pitches). He retired 10 of the final 11 batters he faced after escaping a first-inning jam with runners at the corners.

Tetsuto Yamada (Yakult) — 2-for-3 with a single, a solo homer, two runs scored, and one RBI. The veteran infielder's first home run of the campaign was his biggest swing of the season.

Naoto Matsumoto (Yakult) — 3-for-4 with a walk, two RBI, and one run scored. His two-run single in the fourth broke the game open.

Naoto Uchiyama (Yakult) — 2-for-5 with a two-run single in the seventh. Both hits came with runners in scoring position.

The box score tells a story of one-sided dominance. Yakult out-hit Hiroshima 14-2, a disparity that reflects not just Takahashi's excellence but the complete failure of Hiroshima's bats against every Swallows reliever who followed. Hiroshima drew eight walks — including three in the fourth inning alone — but went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position. The Carp stranded 11 men on base, a figure that looks damning given they managed only two hits all night. Yakult's bullpen (Kihada, Sakaguchi, Hirosawa, Walters, Ishihara) combined for four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out four.

The win improved Yakult to 51-59-1 in the Central League, keeping them in 4th place. Hiroshima dropped to 46-63-4 (estimated), remaining anchored in 6th place — 16 games behind leader Hanshin Tigers.

Yakult continues the three-game series at MAZDA Zoom-Zoom Stadium on 30 August (Game 21), while Hiroshima hosts the rubber match at the same venue.

Yakult put together its most complete offensive performance in months behind a vintage start from Takahashi. For Hiroshima, the arithmetic is bleak: 2 hits, 11 stranded runners, and a bullpen that allowed runs in every inning of relief. This was a mismatch from the first inning on, and the scoreline was, if anything, flattering to the hosts.
