Hiroshima Carp vs Yakult Swallows

Hiroshima Carp flipped the script on Sunday evening at MAZDA Zoom-Zoom Stadium, riding a four-run first inning and a commanding start from left-hander Shohei Mori to beat Yakult Swallows 5-1 in front of 25,137 fans. The result stopped a two-game skid after Yakult had taken the first two games of the series by a combined 18-3 scoreline.

The Carp sent nine men to the plate in the first against Yakult right-hander Yasuhiro Ogawa. Norihiko Naehara led off with a single and advanced on a throwing error. After Minoru Omori reached on a fielder's choice, Jake Fabian lifted a sacrifice fly to centre to open the scoring. Shogo Sakakura drew a walk before Ryosuke Kikuchi ripped an RBI double to right. Tai Sasaki followed with a run-scoring groundout, making it 3-0 before Ogawa could escape the inning.

Hiroshima added a run in the second when Naehara singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mori, and scored on a throwing error — Yakult's second error in two innings. Sakakura made it 5-0 in the third with his 13th home run of the season, a solo shot to right — his first homer since 28 July.

Ogawa's inability to escape the first inning without damage set the tone. The veteran right-hander, who entered with a 1-4 record, needed 30 pitches to get through the frame and never recovered. Yakult's three errors — all in the first two innings — handed Hiroshima extra opportunities. Against a Carp offence that has struggled for much of the season, the early 4-0 lead was more than enough cushion for Mori.

Shohei Mori, Hiroshima (W, 2-3): The 23-year-old lefty delivered a career-best outing, working seven innings while allowing just one run on five hits. He struck out six and walked two, lowering his ERA to 2.87. The only blemish was a solo home run to Yakult's José Santana in the seventh — Santana's 16th of the season.

Norihiko Naehara, Hiroshima: The leadoff man went 3-for-5 with a pair of singles, a double and an RBI, raising his average to .259. He ignited both early rallies.

Shogo Sakakura, Hiroshima: The clean-up hitter went 1-for-3 with a walk and his 13th homer, providing the solo shot that capped the scoring in the third.

Yasuhiro Ogawa, Yakult (L, 1-5): The 36-year-old lasted only four innings, charged with five runs (three earned) on five hits. He walked three and struck out three but was undone by his defence and the first-inning avalanche.

Hiroshima out-hit Yakult 8-6 but the story was the errors: Yakult's three defensive miscues — on routine plays — turned what could have been a competitive start into a rout. The Swallows' bullpen held firm after Ogawa's exit: Shota Maruyama, Kosuke Sakaguchi, Liranso and Kihada combined for five scoreless innings, striking out seven while allowing just two hits. But the damage was already done.

Mori threw first-pitch strikes to 19 of the 28 batters he faced, keeping the Swallows off balance with a steady diet of 89-mph fastballs and a sharp curveball. Yakult's only extra-base hit was Santana's homer; the Swallows managed just five singles otherwise.

The win improves Hiroshima to 47-63-4, still anchored in sixth place in the Central League after play on 29 August (17 games behind Hanshin). But it snapped a three-game series losing streak after dropping the first two. Yakult falls to 52-64-1 in fourth, now 14 games off the pace.

Both teams are off Monday. Hiroshima heads to Nagoya to face the Chunichi Dragons on 1 September, while Yakult returns to Tokyo to host the Hanshin Tigers on the same day.

Efficient, no-drama baseball from Hiroshima: a big first inning, clean defence and a starter who commanded the strike zone from the first pitch. Yakult's errors were uncharacteristic and costly, but Ogawa's inability to limit damage in the opening frame has been a recurring theme — he has not completed six innings in any of his last four starts.
