Naruto Uzushio vs Hachioji Jissen

Naruto Uzushio struck first in the bottom of the 2nd inning, pushing across a single run against Hachioji Jissen starter Tsukahara. From there, the game became a pitchers' duel.

Tsukahara settled into a groove, mixing a knuckle-curve to keep Naruto hitters off-balance. He did not allow another run from the 3rd through the 9th innings, giving his side every chance to rally.

On the other side, Naruto Uzushio's ace Nishimura — who had carried almost the entire Tokushima prefectural tournament on his arm — matched zeros. He worked with a mix of breaking pitches, inducing weak contact and keeping Hachioji Jissen off the board through eight innings.

Hachioji Jissen entered the top of the 9th trailing 1-0 with their tournament life on the line. Leadoff batter Sakura delivered the team's fourth hit of the game to start the frame. Two outs later, with runners on base, pinch hitter Yuki Kaneko ripped an RBI single to left field, scoring Sakura and tying the game at 1-1. The hit extended Hachioji Jissen's first-ever Koshien appearance into extra innings.

Naruto Uzushio loaded the bases in the bottom of the 9th but could not push across the winning run, sending the game to the 10th — the first tiebreak of the 2026 Summer Koshien.

In the top of the 10th, with the tiebreak rule placing runners on first and second, Nishimura worked out of the jam. He induced a groundout and a flyout before escaping a two-out, bases-loaded situation — stranding all three runners and keeping the score level at 1-1.

In the bottom of the 10th, Naruto Uzushio's turn came with runners on first and second. A sacrifice bunt moved them into scoring position. With two outs and runners on second and third, second-year batter Yamamoto lined a single into the outfield, scoring the runner from third for a 2-1 walk-off victory. The hit sent the Naruto Uzushio bench and their supporters in the stands into celebration.

• Nishimura (Naruto Uzushio) — Complete-game 10-inning victory. He held Hachioji Jissen to one run — and that only came in the 9th — while navigating a bases-loaded jam in the top of the 10th. He was the difference for Naruto Uzushio, throwing breaking pitches for strikes and never letting Hachioji's lineup string together multiple hits until the 9th.
• Tsukahara (Hachioji Jissen) — The Hachioji ace delivered a masterful start for a first-time Koshien participant. After allowing one run in the 2nd, he shut out Naruto Uzushio from the 3rd through the 9th innings, relying on his knuckle-curve to keep hitters guessing. He left with his team having tied the game, but the bullpen could not hold in the 10th.
• Yuki Kaneko (Hachioji Jissen) — Entered as a pinch hitter with two outs in the 9th and delivered the game-tying RBI single, the biggest hit in Hachioji Jissen's Koshien history — albeit their only one of this tournament.
• Yamamoto (Naruto Uzushio) — The second-year player delivered in the biggest moment of his career, slapping the walk-off single in the 10th with two outs and the game on the line.

The provider scoreline — 2-1 after 10 innings — reflects a game dominated by pitching rather than offence. Both sides combined for just five runs across eight innings of regulation before the 9th-inning drama. Hachioji Jissen managed only four hits through the first eight innings (Sakura's leadoff single in the 9th was the fifth). Naruto Uzushio's run in the 2nd was their only breakthrough against Tsukahara until the 10th. The first tiebreak of the tournament produced exactly one run for each side in the extra frame — Naruto's coming when it mattered most, with two outs.

The victory is Naruto Uzushio's first opening-round win in 18 years — since the school's predecessor, Naruto Kogyo (Naruto Technical High School), won a game at the 2008 tournament before the school was reorganised and merged. Naruto Uzushio advance to the second round and will face the winner of Chukyo (Gifu) versus Kasumigaura (Ibaraki) on 14 August, the tournament's 10th day.

For Hachioji Jissen, making their first appearance in either the Spring or Summer Koshien, the tournament ends in heartbreaking fashion. The school — which does not have a dedicated baseball field or dormitory and holds practices of only about two hours per day — reached Koshien in the school's 100th anniversary year. They exit with their heads held high after pushing a Tokushima champion to the 10th inning in front of the Koshien crowd.

A classic Koshien first-round encounter defined by two aces trading zeros before the drama of the 9th and 10th innings took over. Hachioji Jissen's story — a first-time qualifier from a modest programme — added emotional weight to a game that showcased everything that makes the Summer Koshien compelling. Naruto Uzushio advance with their ace still on the mound, but tougher tests await in the second round.
