Takushoku University Koryo vs Sendai Ikuei

The first inning was decisive. Sendai Ikuei sent eight batters to the plate against Ninomiya, stringing together three singles and capitalising on aggressive baserunning to build a 3-0 lead before Takushoku had even taken a swings. Against a team with 14 hits of their own, Takudai Koryo spent the rest of the game chasing that gap. They closed to within two runs once (5-3 in the sixth) but never tied it.

Matoi Tayama (Sendai Ikuei) — The clean-up hitter delivered an RBI single in the first and a leadoff triple in the seventh that led directly to the insurance run. Tayama has now driven in runs in three consecutive Koshien games. Player of the match.

Arimoto Goryu (Sendai Ikuei) — Two hits, two RBI — an RBI single in the first and a run-scoring double in the fifth that answered Takushoku's 4-1 response. The second-year second baseman was the most consistent bat in the Sendai lineup.

Fukui Yuki / Kajii / Furukawa (Sendai Ikuei) — Sendai's three-pitcher relay held Takushoku to three runs on 12 hits across nine innings. Starter Fukui worked into the middle innings with the lead, and Furukawa closed with scoreless eighth and ninth frames.

Ninomiya Raku (Takushoku University Koryo) — The senior starter was tagged for four runs over the first two innings but settled into a rhythm before the rain delay. He absorbed the loss but gave his team a chance to rally.

Kaji Seiki & Sakamoto Kanta (Takushoku University Koryo) — The 6-7 hitters provided the game's only back-to-back hits of consequence, driving in two runs in the sixth to make the score 5-3.

Both teams reached double-digit hits — Sendai Ikuei 14, Takushoku University Koryo 12 — but the game was defined by when those hits landed. Sendai's three runs in the first inning came from three separate batters, while Takushoku's two-run sixth was their only multi-run frame. The Miyagi side left more runners on base but also made fewer mistakes; the Chiba representatives could not overcome the early deficit despite out-hitting their opponents over the final seven innings. No home runs were recorded, with both sides manufacturing runs through singles, doubles and situational hitting.

Sendai Ikuei advance to the quarterfinals of the 108th Summer Koshien for the first time in three years — their last trip to the final eight came in 2023 when they finished as runners-up. The winner of Sunday's remaining third-round fixtures will be their opponent in Tuesday's quarterfinal (August 18).

Takushoku University Koryo's tournament ends in the round of 16. The Chiba representative, making their return to Koshien after a gap, matched Sendai hit-for-hit but left their rally too late. The team's senior-heavy lineup — eight of nine starters were third-year students — will disband after the tournament.

Sendai Ikuei's first-inning outburst and deep pitching staff proved the difference against a Takudai Koryo side that competed hard but spent the entire game playing catch-up. The Miyagi team look well equipped for a deep run: three effective pitchers and a lineup that scores in bunches. The quarterfinal draw will test whether they can sustain this against the remaining elite.
