Takagawa Gakuen vs Tenri

Takagawa Gakuen seized control early. In the bottom of the first, three-hole hitter Misawa grounded out to shortstop with runners on first and third, plating the opening run. They added one in the fourth and another in the fifth, building a 3-0 lead through five innings.

The margin reflected the dominance of Takagawa's right-handed ace, Eiji Kinoshita — a third-year with a reported 147 km/h fastball and professional aspirations — who held Tenri scoreless through the early frames.

The game flipped in the top of the sixth. Tenri strung together three consecutive hits from the 3-4-5 spots in the order to score their first run, then a walk loaded the bases. Consecutive bases-loaded walks and a hit batter forced in two more runs to tie the game at 3-3, knocking Kinoshita from the mound.

With one out and the bases still loaded, Yamanaka lifted a sacrifice fly to centre field. Runner Maeda tagged and scored from third — Tenri led 4-3.

Nagao made the lead stand. After allowing three runs through five innings, he shut out Takagawa Gakuen over the final four frames. Tenri added insurance in the eighth when Yamanaka delivered again — a two-RBI double to left-centre with one out and the bases loaded, making it 6-3.

The game ended at 10:26 JST after two hours and 24 minutes. Official attendance was 20,000, per the Japan High School Baseball Federation.

The sixth-inning collapse for Kinoshita was the decisive swing. Through five innings he had scattered a few hits but kept Tenri off the scoreboard, working efficiently with his fastball-slider mix. In the sixth, Tenri's 3-4-5 hitters — Kawachi (catcher), Sekimura and Ozawa, per reports — opened with three straight hits: a single, a double and a single, scoring one and putting runners at the corners. After a walk loaded the bases, Kinoshita lost his command entirely, issuing a bases-loaded walk and then hitting a batter to force in the tying runs. He was replaced after 5+ innings, charged with four earned runs.

The sequence exposed fatigue after Kinoshita's high-stress early innings and the deep counts Nagao had forced on the other side.

Yoshiharu Yamanaka (Tenri, DH): Match-high three RBI — the go-ahead sacrifice fly in the sixth and the decisive two-RBI double in the eighth. Both came with runners in scoring position and one out, textbook situational hitting.

Ryodai Nagao (Tenri, P): Second straight complete-game win; 10 strikeouts against five hits and three walks. After surrendering three runs in the first five innings, Nagao retired 12 of the final 14 batters he faced. Reported at 158 pitches for the game.

Eiji Kinoshita (Takagawa Gakuen, P): Held Tenri scoreless over five innings but lost the strike zone in the sixth, walking and hitting batters with the bases loaded. Charged with four earned runs in 5+ innings.

The box score shows Tenri out-hit Takagawa Gakuen 11-5, but the distribution tells the story. Tenri managed only three hits through five innings against Kinoshita; they racked up six hits in the sixth and eighth innings alone, when his command wavered.

Tenri committed three errors to Takagawa Gakuen's two — defensive sloppiness that did not prove costly partly because Nagao kept generating strikeouts and soft contact with runners on base.

Nagao's 10 strikeouts across nine innings, added to his 13 from the first round, gave him 23 Ks in two tournament starts. Tenri's six-run outburst in two innings (the sixth and eighth) was their most productive offensive stretch of the tournament so far.

Tenri advance to the quarter-finals of the 108th Summer Koshien for the first time in nine years, matching their run in 2017. They will face Chiben Wakayama in the last eight on Tuesday, August 18.

For Takagawa Gakuen, the loss ends a second consecutive third-round appearance and denies them a first-ever quarter-final trip. The Yamaguchi representative, making their fourth Koshien appearance overall and second in a row, exit the tournament after pushing a traditional powerhouse to the brink.

This was a game of two halves of pitching. Kinoshita was excellent until he wasn't — and when his command dissolved, Tenri's veteran-laden lineup punished every mistake. Nagao's resilience after an uncharacteristic early three-run inning, combined with Yamanaka's clutch hitting with runners on, made this a complete team victory. Tenri look a genuine quarter-final threat.
