Chinatrust Brothers vs Rakuten Monkeys

Wu Li-Chen threw seven scoreless innings, striking out seven, and the Chinatrust Brothers pushed two runs across in the 8th inning to defeat the Rakuten Monkeys 2-0 at Taipei Dome on Wednesday. The victory lifted the Brothers to a 17-16 record and strengthened their push up the second-half CPBL standings.

Both starters dominated through seven scoreless frames. Rakuten's Tseng Chia-Hui matched Wu Li-Chen pitch for pitch, allowing only two hits with four strikeouts over seven innings, but exited with a no-decision after the Brothers broke through against the Monkeys bullpen in the 8th.

The decisive rally began quietly with a leadoff walk to Kao Yu-Chieh, who was replaced by pinch-runner Lin Wu Chin-Wei. Sung Sheng-Jui singled, and Chang Jen-Wei followed with another single to load the bases. After Chang Shih-Lun reached on a fielder's choice that forced Sung at third, Chen Chun-Hsiu singled to left, scoring Lin Wu Chin-Wei with the game's first run. Chiang Kun-Yu then singled to right-centre, bringing home Chang Shih-Lun for a 2-0 lead.

Rakuten put the tying run on base in the 9th — Lin Tzu-Wei led off with a single, the Monkeys' fifth hit — but Lee Chen-Chang struck out Ma Chieh-Sen and got Lin Cheng-Hua to ground out for his 14th save.

Tseng Chia-Hui's exit after seven innings fundamentally changed the game. The Rakuten right-hander had surrendered just two hits and faced the minimum through six innings. Once he departed, Lu Yung-Chen — who entered with a 2.25 ERA — could not navigate the bottom of the Brothers order. He faced four batters, allowed two hits and a walk, and was charged with both runs in just 0.1 innings. Wu Li-Chen, by contrast, had thrown 99 pitches through seven and left with a zero in the run column.

• Chen Chun-Hsiu (陳俊秀): 1-for-3 with the go-ahead RBI single.
• Chiang Kun-Yu (江坤宇): 1-for-3 with an RBI single.

Both teams finished with five hits, but the distribution told the story. The Monkeys scattered theirs across seven innings without a multi-hit frame. Rakuten struck out nine times — seven against Wu Li-Chen — and drew only two walks. The Brothers put four of their five hits in the decisive 8th inning alone, along with a walk. Rakuten went 0-for-2 with runners in scoring position; the Brothers went 3-for-7 in RISP spots. The Monkeys left five runners on base to the Brothers' four.

The Brothers improved to 17-16, climbing further into the second-half race. Rakuten fell to 16-12, maintaining second place but missing a chance to keep pace with first-place Wei Chuan Dragons. The result extended the Brothers' strong August run — they entered the night 11-5 in the month since 1 August.

Both teams have a day off Thursday before resuming play on Friday 29 August. The Brothers host the Fubon Guardians, while the Monkeys travel to face the Uni Lions.

A classic pitchers' duel settled by a single inning of bullpen failure. Wu Li-Chen turned in the best start of his young CPBL career, and the Brothers' 8th-inning sequence of three hits and a walk against Lu Yung-Chen was all the offence they needed. Rakuten's inability to solve Wu with runners on base cost them a chance to build on their series-opening win the previous night.
