Woodall (伍鐸) matched Lin through three scoreless frames, retiring the Lions in order in the first, third and fourth — but the home side broke through in the bottom of the fourth. The Lions' patient approach — they drew six walks on the night — created traffic. Chen Chieh-Hsien (陳傑憲) reached base and ultimately scored to make it 1-0. It was the only run against the veteran right-hander all night.

From that point, the game became a battle of bullpens. Lin worked into the seventh, leaving after a two-out single in the top half. Chiu Hao-Chun (邱浩鈞) entered and retired the only batter he faced on a first-pitch flyout to right, needing just six pitches. Masaki Takashio (髙塩將樹) allowed a single but struck out one in a scoreless eighth, and Chung Yun-Hua (鍾允華) worked around a one-out walk in the ninth to close it out.

The Dragons put the tying run on base in each of the final three innings — Guo Tian-Xin (郭天信) singled in the seventh, Liu Chi-Hung (劉基鴻) walked in the eighth, and Li Kai-Wei (李凱威) walked with one out in the ninth — but never advanced a runner past second.

The fourth-inning sequence decided the game. Woodall had surrendered only two baserunners through three innings, but a single, a bases-loaded walk and a wild pitch — only his sixth of the season — allowed Chen Chieh-Hsien to score from third. Woodall escaped further damage by striking out Chen Sheng-Ping (陳聖平) to end the inning, but the damage was done.

Woodall's day ended after six innings and 110 pitches — his highest count since late June. The Lions had forced him to throw 23 pitches in the decisive fourth alone.

• Lin Chao-En (林詔恩) — Player of the Match: 6.1 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 3 K, 2 BB, 97 pitches. The 22-year-old lefty lowered his ERA to 3.33, mixing a fastball in the low 140s (km/h) with a sharp changeup. First MVP of the season.

• Bryan Woodall (伍鐸): 6.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R (1 ER), 2 K, 3 BB, 110 pitches. The 38-year-old veteran's loss was his first in five decisions since 18 July. ERA dropped to 4.05.

• Chen Chung-Yu (陳重羽): 3-for-4. The Lions catcher accounted for half the team's six hits, singling in the second, fourth and sixth innings. Fifth multi-hit game of the second half.

• Guo Tian-Xin (郭天信): 2-for-4. The Dragons leadoff man recorded two hits but was left stranded both times.

The 1-0 final belies a relatively even offensive output. Both teams managed six hits, but the Lions drew twice as many walks (six to three). The decisive gap came in situational hitting — the Lions went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position but made their lone run stand up via a wild pitch, while the Dragons went 0-for-3 with RISP and left five stranded.

The Uni Lions (15-17-0) climbed to fourth place, within 2.0 games of second in the tightly bunched CPBL second-half standings. The Dragons (17-13-0) remained second but are now just half a game ahead of the Chinatrust Brothers (18-16). Rakuten Monkeys lead the table at 16-13 (.552).

The two sides meet again on Thursday 27 August at Asia-Pacific Baseball Stadium (first pitch 11:35 UTC / 19:35 local time). The Dragons have now seen the UNDER hit in nine of their last 13 road games.

A classic pitchers' duel settled by a single walk-filled inning and a crisp relief performance. Lin Chao-En earned the MVP with 6.1 composed innings against a Dragons lineup averaging 4.3 runs per game over its previous ten. Woodall's quality start went unrewarded, but the margins in a 1-0 game are cruelly thin.
