St. Paul vs Toledo Mud Hens

The game was effectively decided before the end of the first inning. Ben Ross launched a two-run homer (his 15th) off Mud Hens starter Sawyer Gipson-Long (2-6) on the first at-bat of the frame, scoring Walker Jenkins after Jenkins led off with a walk. Two batters later, Hendry Mendez crushed a 90.9 mph four-seam fastball to left field for a two-run shot (his 8th), pushing the lead to 4-0.

David Bañuelos added a solo home run (his 6th) in the fourth inning, also off Gipson-Long, to make it 5-1. St. Paul tacked on two runs in the seventh and one more in the eighth — all without another home run.

Toledo scratched across single runs in the third, fourth and seventh innings. Cal Stevenson drove in a run with a groundout in the third. The Mud Hens loaded the bases in the fourth and scored on a passed ball. In the seventh, they managed a run on a fielder's choice.

The first inning was decisive. Gipson-Long allowed four runs on three hits in the opening frame — including back-to-back home runs to Ross and Mendez with two outs. He finished 4.2 innings, charged with five earned runs on seven hits and three home runs. The Saints never trailed.

The Saints out-hit the Mud Hens 12-8, but the damage was concentrated: three of St. Paul's 12 hits left the yard. The Saints struck out 10 times and walked only twice, yet their home runs accounted for seven of their eight runs.

Toledo had runners in scoring position in four different innings (2-for-10 RISP) but left 10 men on base — nearly double St. Paul's six. The Mud Hens' bullpen (Hanifee, Minton, Little) combined for 3.1 innings of three-run ball, blunting any chance of a rally.

St. Paul's three errors (Sabato, Gray, Morissette) were costly in the field but not on the scoreboard — only one unearned run crossed as a result.

For St. Paul, this win marked their continued strong play at home, where the deep power lineup has produced consistent run support. For Toledo, the road to catching the Saints runs through limiting the long ball — they've now allowed three or more homers in a game six times this season.

A straightforward power display decided this one early. St. Paul's first-inning barrage off Gipson-Long was the kind of knockout punch the Saints needed — three homers across four innings effectively ended the contest before the Mud Hens could mount a sustained rally.
