Iowa Cubs vs Omaha Storm Chasers

One day after Omaha launched five home runs in a 9-6 win, Iowa's pitching staff flipped the script. Right-hander Kohl Franklin (1-0) delivered his best outing of the season, holding the Storm Chasers to two runs over five-plus innings while striking out four. The Iowa bullpen backed him with four innings of one-run relief.

Iowa broke the game open with a four-run fifth inning. James Triantos sparked the rally with an RBI single, and Chas McCormick — batting .409 over his previous seven games — followed with a two-run single to put the I-Cubs ahead 3-2. Ben Cowles added a two-run double in the sixth, and Triantos drove in another run to stretch the lead to 6-2.

Omaha answered with a run in the seventh, but Iowa restored its four-run cushion when Jonathon Long lined an RBI double into left-centre field, making it 7-3.

After Omaha touched Iowa starter Javier Assad for three early runs in Tuesday's 9-6 loss, Franklin set a different tone. He retired 15 of 16 Storm Chasers hitters from the end of the first inning into the sixth — a stretch of scoreless dominance that gave Iowa's offence time to find its rhythm.

Iowa's pitching staff held Omaha to three runs after the Storm Chasers had scored nine on 15 hits the night before. The I-Cubs retired 15 of 16 Omaha batters across a stretch spanning the first and sixth innings — a complete reversal from Tuesday, when Omaha hit five homers.

The win lifts Iowa to 23-30 in the International League West second-half standings, still 10 games behind division-leading Indianapolis. Omaha drops to 25-26, 7.0 GB. The two teams continue the six-game series Thursday, August 27 at Principal Park (6:38 PM CT).

Iowa's response after a demoralising 9-6 loss was emphatic. Franklin's composed start and the bullpen's lockdown relief — one earned run across the final four innings — provided the blueprint the I-Cubs need to stay competitive in a tough IL West division.
