Indianapolis Indians vs Columbus Clippers

Both teams traded solo home runs in the first inning. Columbus opened the scoring when Daniel Schneemann (2-for-4, HR, 2B) launched his third home run of the season — a solo shot to left-centre off Indians starter Noah Davis. Indianapolis answered immediately in the bottom half: leadoff man Mitch Jebb sent his seventh homer of the year to right-centre off Clippers starter Yorman Gómez, knotting the game at 1-1.

The Clippers regained control in the third. Schneemann doubled and scored on Kyle Manzardo's RBI double, and Kody Huff followed with an RBI double of his own to make it 3-1 Columbus. Davis was pulled after three innings, having allowed six hits and three earned runs.

Indianapolis flipped the game in the bottom of the third. Cameron Barstad led off with a solo home run — his third of the season — cutting the deficit to 3-2. After a strikeout, Duce Gourson doubled and Ronny Simon walked. Enmanuel Valdez then crushed a 2-run home run to centre field, his team-leading 17th of the season, giving Indianapolis a 4-3 lead they never relinquished.

That was the last scoring play of the game. The Indians bullpen combination of Brandon Neeck, Samy Darrell-Hicks, Brandon Eisert and Beau Burrows held Columbus hitless over the final six innings, striking out nine batters and allowing only one baserunner.

Valdez's two-out, two-run homer in the third turned a 3-1 deficit into a 4-3 lead. According to win-probability data, Valdez's swing shifted the game odds by +22% in Indianapolis's favour — the single largest swing of any plate appearance. Yorman Gómez (L, 1-5) was pulled after 3.1 innings having allowed four earned runs on six hits with three home runs.

Enmanuel Valdez (IND) — 1-for-4, HR (17), 2 RBI. His 17th homer of the season brought his RBI total to 69. Both runs batted in came with two outs in the decisive third inning.

Brandon Neeck (IND) — W, 3-2. 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K. Retired all six batters he faced in the fourth and fifth, stabilising the game after Davis's short start.

Beau Burrows (IND) — SV, 13. 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. Worked a clean ninth for his 13th save of the season.

Brandon Eisert (IND) — H, 5. 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K. Recorded +22% win-probability added, the highest of any player.

Daniel Schneemann (COL) — 2-for-4, HR (3), 2B (8), 2 R, RBI. His solo homer and double accounted for two of Columbus's three runs. His 106.6 mph exit velocity was the hardest-hit ball of the game.

Both teams managed six hits, but three of Indianapolis's four runs came via home runs compared to one for Columbus. Clippers starter Yorman Gómez allowed three homers across 3.1 innings; the Columbus bullpen (Steven Pérez, Connor Brogdon, Carlos Hernández) then threw 4.2 scoreless innings with one hit and six strikeouts, but the damage was done. Indians pitchers struck out 13 Clippers batters — the most by an Indianapolis staff in any game since early August. Columbus left six runners on base and went 3-for-9 with runners in scoring position, while Indianapolis was 1-for-8.

The Indians climbed back to .500 (64-64) for the first time since July, winners of three straight and six of their last 10. They sit 15th in the 30-team International League. Columbus fell to 66-59, ninth in the league standings, having lost two straight after a 5-5 run in their previous 10 games. The two teams continue their six-game series at Victory Field on Thursday 27 August (6:35 PM ET), followed by games through Saturday.
