Charlotte Knights vs Memphis Redbirds

The game was a pitcher's duel from the first pitch. Charlotte left-hander Noah Schultz matched Molina zero for zero through three innings, needing just 65 pitches over five frames.

Memphis broke through in the top of the fourth. Center fielder Colton Ledbetter lifted a sacrifice fly to open the scoring. One batter later, third baseman Ramon Mendoza cracked an RBI double to double the lead to 2-0.

Those two runs were all Molina would need. The lefty allowed five hits — two of them doubles — walked two and struck out three over five innings of work. Charlotte went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and never advanced a runner past second base.

Tyler Davis tossed a scoreless top of the sixth for Charlotte, but the Knights never got their turn at the plate in the bottom half as the rain arrived.

The fourth-inning combination of Ledbetter's sacrifice fly and Mendoza's double gave Memphis a two-run cushion, but the decisive moment came when Molina escaped a jam in the bottom of the fourth. After giving up a leadoff double to Andy Weber, Molina stranded him by retiring the next three batters — two via strikeout.

Mason Molina (MEM) — Player of the Match. The 25-year-old lefty earned his second win of the season (2-2) with a rain-shortened complete game, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out three. He threw 56 of 87 pitches for strikes.

Noah Schultz (CLT) — The 23-year-old lefty deserved a better fate. Schultz allowed just two runs on five hits over five innings, striking out three and walking two on only 65 pitches. He took the loss to fall to 3-2 with a 2.25 ERA.

Korey Lee (CLT) — The designated hitter was the only Knight with multiple hits, going 2-for-2 with a pair of singles.

Ramon Mendoza (MEM) — The third baseman delivered the decisive RBI double in the fourth inning, providing the insurance Memphis needed.

Tyler Davis (CLT) — The reliever worked a scoreless sixth inning, allowing no hits and one walk while striking out one.

Both teams finished with five hits, but the difference was situational hitting. Memphis went 1-for-3 with runners in scoring position and got the key two-out RBI from Mendoza. Charlotte went 0-for-5 with RISP and struck out six times. The Knights did manage two doubles (Weber, Joey Wiemer) but couldn't turn them into runs. Molina faced 22 batters and threw 87 pitches, 56 for strikes (64%). Schultz was even more efficient, throwing 65 pitches — just 13 per inning.

The win improved Memphis to 70-58 on the season, keeping them in the thick of the International League West race. The Redbirds sat third in the division behind St. Paul (74-57) and Nashville (71-60) as of the game date, but remained firmly in the playoff hunt with their 70th victory.

Charlotte dropped to 68-60 with the loss. The Knights sat second in the IL East standings, 10 games behind division-leading Rochester (80-50), but still well-positioned for a postseason push with a +107 run differential on the season.

Game 3 of the six-game series was scheduled for Thursday, 27 August at 7:04 PM ET at Truist Field.

A genuine pitcher's duel interrupted by weather. Molina and Schultz both deserved better than a rain-shortened decision, but Molina's ability to strand runners in key spots made the difference. For Charlotte, stranded runners and an 0-for-5 mark with RISP told the story of a lineup that couldn't solve a lefty who had his changeup working.
