Louisville Bats vs Gwinnett Stripers

Gwinnett struck early and hard. The Stripers loaded the bases in the top of the second against Louisville starter Brandon Williamson before DaShawn Keirsey lined an RBI triple to clear them, handing the visitors a 4-0 lead before the Bats had registered a hit.

Louisville's first knock did not come until the bottom of the third, when Dominic Pitelli singled through the right side off Gwinnett starter Garrett Baumann. Will Benson followed with a two-out double in the fourth but was stranded.

Williamson exited after 4.1 innings, charged with four runs on eight hits. He struck out one and walked three. Zach McCambley escaped the inning without further damage, and the score remained 4-0 through five.

Louisville finally mounted a threat in the sixth. A walk, a single and a hit batter loaded the bases for Leo Balcazar, who delivered a single to centre that slipped through the fielder's glove and cleared the bases — 4-3 in an instant.

But Baumann departed after 5.2 innings (7 K, 2 BB, 3 R, 2 ER), and Gwinnett reliever Joel Payamps stranded the tying run. Payamps also pitched a clean seventh, preserving the one-run lead.

The Stripers stretched the margin in the ninth. José Azócar crushed a solo home run over the left-field seats off Louisville reliever Conner Phillips, making it 5-3. Louisville went down in order in the bottom half, and the Bats' fourth straight loss was sealed.

Leo Balcazar (Louisville) was responsible for all three Bats runs with his bases-clearing single in the sixth. He drove in two runs and scored one, accounting for Louisville's entire offensive output.

Garrett Baumann (Gwinnett) earned his second win of the season, scattering three runs (two earned) over 5.2 innings with seven strikeouts. He handed a 4-3 lead to a bullpen that held.

DaShawn Keirsey (Gwinnett) broke the game open with his RBI triple in the second, the decisive blow in the four-run frame.

José Azócar (Gwinnett) provided essential insurance with a solo homer in the ninth, the final run of the contest.

Brandon Williamson (Louisville) took the loss (1-2) after allowing four runs on eight hits across 4.1 innings.

Louisville struck out 11 times against Gwinnett pitching, managing only five hits as a team — three of which came in the sixth-inning rally. The Bats' bullpen was effective outside the second-inning damage: Jared Lyons retired all three batters he faced in the seventh, and Hunter Parks struck out three in his relief outing. But the offence could not capitalise on scoreless frames, going 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position.

Gwinnett's four-run second was the difference. Five Stripers pitchers combined to allow just three runs (two earned) while striking out 11, and the bullpen (Payamps, Lyons for GWN) held Louisville to one hit over the final 3.1 innings after Baumann's exit.

The loss drops the Bats to 57-70 overall and 18-36 in the second half of the International League season. Gwinnett improves to 65-63 (27-27 second half) and continues to push above .500. The Stripers now lead the six-game series 2-0 ahead of Friday's third instalment at Louisville Slugger Field.

A familiar pattern for the Bats: an early deficit too deep to climb out of, a rally that falls just short, and a bullpen that holds but receives no late support. Gwinnett got the big hits when it mattered and leaned on a bullpen that shut the door. Louisville will need a sharper start — and better situational hitting — to avoid a fifth straight loss.
