Indianapolis Indians vs Columbus Clippers

Columbus struck first and struck fast. Cooper Ingle led off the game with a sharp single, Blake Perkins doubled him to third, and Ralphy Velazquez plated Ingle with a groundout for a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.

The Clippers blew the game open in the second. Milan Tolentino walked, Alfonsin Rosario singled him home and advanced to second on a throwing error by left fielder Ronny Simon. Rosario stole third and scored when Dayan Frias reached on a fielding error by shortstop Grae Kessinger. Columbus led 3-0 after two.

Indianapolis answered immediately. Tyler Callihan led off the bottom of the second with a solo home run (7) to right-centre, cutting the deficit to 3-1.

The Indians tied it in the third. A single from Derek Berg and a walk to Duce Gourson set the table for Ronny Simon, who lined a two-run double to centre field, scoring Berg and Gourson to make it 3-3.

Columbus reclaimed the lead in the fourth against reliever Wilber Dotel, who had just entered the game. Rosario doubled, Frias tripled him home, and Velazquez's forceout brought Frias home for a 5-3 advantage.

The Indians chipped away in the fifth. Mitch Jebb walked, Gourson was hit by a pitch, and after Simon grounded into a double play, Callihan singled Jebb home to make it 5-4.

The decisive moment came in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Grae Kessinger walked off Clippers reliever Jack Jasiak. Berg then crushed the first pitch he saw — a 93.6 mph four-seam fastball — 381 feet over the right-centre field wall for a two-run home run. The blast swung win probability by +31.8%, the largest single-play swing of the game, and gave Indianapolis a 6-5 lead they would not relinquish.

Jasiak (0-1), making his Triple-A debut, was charged with the blown save and the loss after allowing two runs on three hits over two innings.

• Derek Berg (IND): 2-for-3, HR (2), 2 RBI, 2 R. Only his second homer of the season, but it could not have been more timely.
• Tyler Callihan (IND): 2-for-4, HR (7), 2 RBI. Homered in the second and added a game-tying — then go-ahead — RBI single in the fifth.
• Ronny Simon (IND): 3-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI. His two-run double in the third erased the early 3-0 deficit.
• Alfonsin Rosario (COL): 3-for-4, 2 2B, 2 R, SB. The only Clipper with multiple extra-base hits.
• Dayan Frias (COL): 1-for-4, 3B, RBI, R, SB. His fourth-inning triple drove in a run and sparked a brief Columbus rally.

Both sides finished with 10 hits, but the Clippers left 11 runners on base — including three in the ninth — compared to five for Indianapolis. Columbus went 1-for-14 with runners in scoring position, a stark number that explains how they out-hit the Indians but still lost. The Indians logged just two home runs (Callihan, Berg) but made them count, driving in four of their six runs via the long ball.

Indians starter Hunter Barco laboured through three innings (69 pitches, 5 K, 2 BB) but allowed only one earned run. Dotel (W, 5-3) settled the game with three innings of relief, scattering three hits and two runs. Cy Nielson and CD Pelham combined for three scoreless innings to close it out, with Pelham earning his first save despite loading the bases in the ninth. He escaped by striking out Tolentino swinging.

Clippers starter Ben Lively threw 4.2 innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits with four walks and two strikeouts.

The Indians improved to 34-21 in the International League's second-half standings, maintaining a strong hold on the IL West. For Columbus (26-27), the loss was another missed opportunity in a tight divisional race. Indianapolis continue their homestand — their next fixture is at Victory Field. Columbus next hit the road looking to sharpen their RISP production after a 1-for-14 showing that decided this contest.

A game of errors and missed chances that the Indians survived through timely power. Berg's go-ahead homer was the difference, but Callihan's contributions across the middle innings and Columbus's 1-for-14 RISP line tell a deeper story. The Clippers did enough to win but not enough to close.
