Charlotte Knights vs Memphis Redbirds

Charlotte struck first in the bottom of the 2nd. Weber crushed a two-run homer in his first at-bat, scoring after Oscar Colás had reached base. The home side led 2-0 and didn't relinquish it until the 6th.

Davis Martin, making his first appearance with Charlotte this season on a Major League rehab assignment, was sharp from the outset. The right-hander fired five shutout innings, allowing only one hit while striking out five. He faced the minimum through three innings and didn't allow a runner past second base.

Memphis broke through in the 6th. With two outs and the bases loaded, the Redbirds delivered a game-tying double that scored both runners, knotting the game at 2-2. The double ended Martin's night — he left having allowed two runs (both earned) on two hits with five strikeouts.

The score remained 2-2 through the 7th, 8th and 9th innings as both bullpens held firm. Nick Altermatt, Aidan Anderson, Jaden Woods and Garrett Schoenle combined for scoreless relief work down the stretch for Memphis, keeping Charlotte off the board after the 2nd.

In the top of the 10th, Memphis placed the automatic runner at second base. A go-ahead RBI single brought him home, putting the Redbirds ahead 3-2. Charlotte got its automatic runner to second in the bottom half but could not bring him across, and the game ended with Memphis celebrating its second straight win of the series.

Memphis's two-out, bases-loaded double in the 6th inning flipped the game. Charlotte had controlled the tempo from the 2nd inning onward behind Martin's stellar rehab outing, but the Redbirds' timely hit changed everything. After that frame, the game was a brand-new contest. The momentum stayed with Memphis through the late innings and into extras, where the automatic-runner single in the 10th sealed it.

• Davis Martin (Charlotte): The White Sox right-hander was dominant in his Triple-A rehab debut — 5.0 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 5 K, 0 BB. He retired the first nine batters he faced and gave Charlotte every chance to win, but the 6th-inning rally prevented him from factoring in the decision.
• Andy Weber (Charlotte): 2-for-4, a two-run home run in the 2nd inning. He was the lone Knight with a multi-hit game and provided all of Charlotte's offence on the night.
• Memphis bullpen (collective): After the game-tying double in the 6th, the Memphis relievers threw 4.1 scoreless innings. Altermatt, Anderson, Woods and Schoenle allowed just two hits and struck out four, keeping the door open for the 10th-inning winner.
• Memphis 10th-inning RBI: The go-ahead single in the top of the 10th scored the automatic runner from second and proved to be the difference.

The Redbirds collected only six hits to Charlotte's seven and committed no errors (Charlotte had one), yet won by a run. That disparity — scoring three runs on six hits while holding a team with seven hits to two — tells the story of timely hitting. Charlotte's damage came entirely in one inning: the two-run Weber homer accounted for all of their offence. After the 2nd, Charlotte managed five hits but never scored again. Memphis, by contrast, bunched both of its 6th-inning hits together for a two-run rally, then manufactured the winning run in extras with a single.

Charlotte stranded its automatic runner at second in the 10th, a microcosm of a night where the Knights could not add to their early lead.

The win improves Memphis to 70-58 on the season. As the first-half International League West champions, the Redbirds are already assured a playoff spot but are playing for seeding and momentum in the second half. Charlotte drops to 67-59 and remains in the thick of the IL East race, where Rochester leads at 75-48.

The series continues Friday evening with a special 5:05 p.m. first pitch at Truist Field. Memphis has won two straight after dropping Tuesday's series opener.

A pitchers' duel that turned on two swings — Weber's homer for Charlotte and Memphis's two-out double in the 6th — and was ultimately decided by the extra-innings rule. Martin's rehab start was the headline, but Memphis's bullpen depth and ability to manufacture a run when it mattered made the difference in a game that offered little margin for error.
