St. Paul vs Toledo Mud Hens

St. Paul starter Ricky Castro (L, 3–3) never found a rhythm. The Mud Hens struck in the first when Trei Cruz launched a solo homer to right-centre — his third of the season — for a 1–0 lead.

Castro's control unravelled in the second. Cal Stevenson singled, stole second, and moved to third on a wild pitch before Michael Siani crushed a two-run homer to right, making it 3–0 Mud Hens.

Toledo broke the game open in the fourth. Stevenson and Max Burt walked to open the inning, Siani sacrificed them over, and Cruz punched a two-run single to centre, stretching the lead to 5–0 and chasing Castro (3.1 IP, 5 H, 5 ER, 3 BB, 6 K).

Burt added a two-run blast in the fifth off reliever Alejandro Hidalgo — his third homer of the season — to make it 7–0.

St. Paul finally answered in the bottom of the fifth. Tristan Gray singled, and Tanner Schobel crushed a two-run homer to left-centre off Mud Hens reliever Beau Brieske, trimming the deficit to 7–2. Emmanuel Rodriguez led off the sixth with a solo homer — his 10th — to make it 7–3.

But the Mud Hens snuffed any comeback hopes in the eighth. Stevenson walked again, Burt singled, and Josue Briceño deposited a two-run double off Marco Raya to restore the six-run cushion at 9–3.

The game flipped decisively in the second inning. After Stevenson reached base, stole second, and scored on Castro's wild pitch — all before Siani's two-run homer — the Saints trailed 3–0 and their starter was rattled. Castro threw 80 pitches across 3.1 innings, and the Mud Hens pounced on every mistake. From that point, Toledo never led by fewer than three runs.

Trei Cruz (TOL): 2-for-4 with a solo homer, a two-run single, three RBIs, two runs, and a walk. His first-inning blast set the tone and his fourth-inning single broke the game open.

Cal Stevenson (TOL): 1-for-3 with three runs, two walks, and a stolen base. He reached base three times and scored in the second, fourth, and fifth innings — the catalyst at the top of the order.

Max Burt (TOL): 1-for-4 with a two-run homer, two RBIs, and a walk. His fifth-inning shot — the Mud Hens' third homer — effectively ended any realistic St. Paul rally.

Tanner Schobel (STP): 2-for-3 with a two-run homer and a walk. He provided St. Paul's only meaningful offence with his sixth homer of the season.

Player of the Match: Trei Cruz — his three RBIs and all-around impact from the leadoff spot drove the Mud Hens' offence.

The Mud Hens managed only eight hits but turned them into nine runs by drawing nine walks, a theme that defined the night. St. Paul's staff issued free passes to 29% of batters faced. Toledo struck out 15 times but still posted a .474 OBP, underscoring how damaging the walks were. The Saints' pitchers threw 125 strikes against 89 balls — a 58% strike rate that is well below the 64% Triple-A average.

The Saints collected seven hits and two homers but went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position. St. Paul's only runs came via the long ball; they never strung together a rally.

Toledo's bullpen was efficient after starter Carl Edwards Jr. (4.1 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 7 K) left. Five relievers combined for 4.2 innings of four-hit, two-run ball, with Brieske (W, 3-0) eating the middle innings despite surrendering both St. Paul homers.

In the International League West second-half standings, St. Paul (31–22) remained one game behind Indianapolis (32–20) after the Indians also won on Thursday. Toledo (25–28) climbed to within seven games of the division lead.

The Mud Hens — who had lost five straight before this game — snapped their skid in emphatic fashion and improved to 12–14 on the road in the second half. St. Paul dropped to 17–7 at home.

The series continues Friday at 7:07 p.m. CT at CHS Field. St. Paul will send RHP Sawyer Gipson-Long to the mound; Toledo's probable starter is TBA.

Toledo's approach was simple and effective: work the count, take walks, and punish mistakes. Castro's wildness and Hidalgo's inability to throw strikes handed the Mud Hens a lead they never threatened to relinquish. St. Paul's offence showed pop — two solo homers — but lacked the sequencing to mount a genuine comeback. A flat start by the Saints and a disciplined, aggressive game by the Mud Hens decided this one early.
