Rochester Red Wings vs Buffalo Bisons

Champlain settled after the fifth, finishing with four innings of one-run ball, allowing two hits and three walks while striking out six. RHP Yovanny Cruz slammed the door in the ninth, retiring the side on 14 pitches and earning his first save with Rochester.

The sequence from 2-0 down to 4-2 up in the span of a half-inning was the decisive shift. Peguero's bases-clearing double — the hardest-hit ball of the night — came on a 1-1 count after the Bisons starter had been pulled, and it gave Rochester a lead it never relinquished. The Red Wings' ability to answer Buffalo's runs immediately in both the fourth and fifth innings prevented any momentum from building on the visitors' side.

Rochester's one error proved harmless — Buffalo stranded runners in scoring position in both the sixth and eighth innings, going 2-for-8 with runners in scoring position on the night. The Red Wings' bullpen trio of Lyon, Champlain and Cruz combined for 6.1 innings, allowing just one earned run on five hits.

The win lifted Rochester to 34-21 in the second half and 79-49 overall. Combined with Columbus beating Indianapolis, the Red Wings jumped into a tie for first place in the IL second-half standings with 11 games remaining in the regular season. Buffalo dropped to 28-26 in the second half, 63-66 overall, and remains outside the playoff picture. These I-90 rivals meet again on Saturday 29 August at 6:45 p.m. ET, with LHP Jared Simpson expected to start for Rochester.

Rochester's ability to answer every Buffalo punch in the same inning showed the composure of a team peaking at the right time. Peguero's bat is heating up at the ideal moment, and the bullpen has now delivered three consecutive quality outings. The Bisons, by contrast, lack a finishing punch — they threatened late but could not solve Champlain or Cruz once the game tightened.
