St. Paul vs Toledo Mud Hens

Toledo jumped on Saints starter Germán Márquez (L, 0-1) immediately in the first. Trei Cruz singled to lead off and Jace Jung walked. After Max Anderson flew out to centre, Josue Briceño grounded an RBI single to right. John Peck followed with a single to centre, scoring Jung for a 2-0 lead.

The Mud Hens added another in the second. Cal Stevenson walked, stole second and moved to third on a throwing error by catcher Noah Cardenas. Jung brought him home with a double to right — his 21st of the season — for a 3-0 advantage.

The Saints went 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position — the decisive failure on a night when opportunities did arise. St. Paul left nine runners on base and managed just five hits against a Mud Hens staff that has now struck out 50 batters across the last three games combined.

• Jace Jung (Toledo) — 1-for-4 with a double, a walk and an RBI. His second-inning double stretched the lead to 3-0 and effectively decided the game.
• Kala’i Rosario (St. Paul) — 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. The only Saint with multiple hits on a night the lineup struck out 19 times.
• Miguel Granillo (Toledo) — 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 5 K. The right-hander was electric in relief, fanning five of the seven batters he faced.

Toledo out-hit St. Paul 11-5, but the strikeout column tells the story: 19 Saints strikeouts, among the highest single-game totals in the International League this season. Wolf accounted for 11 in just five innings (19.8 K/9), while Granillo added five in 1.2 frames and Yosver Díaz and Brenan Hanifee contributed three combined in two innings.

St. Paul went 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position against Toledo’s 4-for-12. Despite leaving nine runners on base themselves, the Mud Hens capitalised early — all four runs came with two outs.

The game lasted 2 hours, 21 minutes — remarkably crisp for a Triple-A contest featuring 16 hits, seven walks and a combined 26 strikeouts. Márquez threw 94 pitches (55 strikes) and absorbed the loss in his first start since joining the Saints on a rehab assignment.

The Mud Hens (61-68, 28-28 second half) have won four straight against St. Paul after dropping the series opener 8-3 on Tuesday. Toledo now trails St. Paul (73-56, 31-25 second half) by three games in the IL West second-half standings, though the Saints’ push for a playoff spot has stalled with three consecutive defeats.

St. Paul, the IL West first-half champion, holds a three-game lead in the wild-card race but will need to reverse course quickly. The series continues Saturday at 7:37 PM CDT at CHS Field, followed by the series finale Sunday.

This was a clinic in pitching and opportunism. Wolf carved through a quality Triple-A lineup with authority, and the Mud Hens’ two-out hitting in the early innings proved decisive. St. Paul’s 19 strikeouts are a flashing warning sign for a contact-oriented lineup — and with the postseason approaching, the Saints don’t have long to sort it out.
