Iowa Cubs vs Omaha Storm Chasers

Omaha struck first and kept swinging. The Storm Chasers pushed across a run in the top of the first and added two more in the second against Iowa starter Braxton Garrett, who laboured through five innings. Two more runs in the fourth gave Omaha a 5-1 lead, and the visitors appeared in control.

Iowa answered each time. BJ Murray led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run — his second consecutive game doing so and his 16th of the year — cutting the early deficit to 2-1. After Omaha's two-run fourth made it 5-1, the Cubs got one back in the bottom half to make it 5-2.

The game flipped in the fifth. Jackson Cluff led off the inning with a solo home run, his first as an I-Cub and seventh overall. Later in the frame, catcher/first baseman Owen Ayers — the Chicago Cubs' No. 2 overall prospect — crushed a two-run homer, his third with Iowa and 25th across all levels. That four-run outburst gave Iowa its first lead at 6-5.

Omaha tied it 6-6 in the seventh, setting the stage for the decisive moment.

Ben Cowles delivered the go-ahead RBI double in the bottom of the eighth, scoring Owen Miller (who went 3-for-4 with two runs scored) to put Iowa up 7-6. It was Cowles' second RBI of the night — he also had a sacrifice fly in the fourth.

Reliever Jayden Murray (1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB) earned the win after navigating a tense ninth inning in which he walked three batters. Eduarnial Nuñez entered with two outs and the bases loaded and induced a fly out to right field to secure the save.

• Ben Cowles (IOW): 1-for-3, 1 2B, 1 SF, 2 RBI. His eighth-inning double was the difference.
• BJ Murray (IOW): 1-for-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI. Second straight game leading off with a home run. Leads the International League in triples (9).
• James Triantos (IOW): 2-for-4. Extended his strong season at the plate.
• Braxton Garrett (IOW): 5 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 4 K, 1 BB. Battled but gave up three solo home runs.

Iowa out-hit Omaha 11-8 and played error-free baseball (0 errors) against one Omaha miscue. The Cubs' four-run fifth inning turned a 5-2 deficit into a 6-5 lead. Iowa moved to 26-30 in the second half, while Omaha dropped to 25-29.

The win gave Iowa a 4-1 series lead over Omaha with one game remaining. The Cubs have won seven of their last eight games dating back to 22 August. Iowa has now won four consecutive games for the third time this season.
