Connor Wietgrefe (Indianapolis): Lasted only 1.2 innings — his shortest start of the season. The lefty walked four batters in addition to the five hits, and his inability to throw strikes in the early going dug a hole the Indians could not escape.

Player of the Match: Robert Hassell III (Columbus)

Both teams finished with eight hits, but distribution told the story. Columbus bunched five of theirs across the first two innings while Indianapolis scattered theirs across the middle frames. The Clippers also drew four walks in the first two innings against Wietgrefe, who threw 53 pitches before being pulled. Indianapolis went 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position through the first three innings and 3-for-11 overall — not awful, but insufficient against a five-run early deficit.

The Indians' error on Tolentino's throw in the fourth gifted them an unearned run, but their own defensive mistake (one error charged to Indianapolis) had no direct scoring impact. Neither side committed multiple defensive sins; the game was lost on the mound.

Columbus improved to 27-27 in the second half and 68-60 overall, keeping pace in the International League standings. Indianapolis dropped to 34-22 in the second half — still a strong half-season mark — but fell to 65-66 overall, meaning they need a strong finish to climb above .500 for the full campaign.

The two sides conclude their six-game series on Sunday at 1:35 PM ET. RHP Thomas Harrington (2-6, 5.72) is scheduled for the Indians against Columbus RHP Trenton Denholm (9-5, 4.82).

A clinical early ambush from Columbus — five runs before the Indians recorded their sixth out — decided this game long before the ninth-inning drama. Indianapolis showed fight in the middle innings but ran out of runway against a Clippers bullpen that closed the door. Hassell's bat and Peterson's five steady innings were the difference in a game that followed a simple formula: score early, hold on.
