Charlotte Knights vs Memphis Redbirds

Memphis struck first in the top of the second. Ramon Mendoza was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a catcher's interference call against Kyle Teel, then scored on Brody Moore's sacrifice fly to right — a 1–0 lead without a hit in the inning.

Charlotte answered decisively in the bottom half. Junior Perez walked, and Andy Weber lined a single to right to put runners at the corners. After a strikeout, Riley Unroe singled to right to plate Perez. Rikuu Nishida then grounded into a fielder's choice that scored Weber, and Nishida stole second before coming home on Ryan Galanie's RBI single to right. The three-run frame made it 3–1.

The score stayed there until the seventh. Caden Connor led off with a single, stole second, and moved to third on a groundout. After Unroe walked, Teel — on a Major League rehab assignment from the Chicago White Sox — crushed a two-run double to centre, scoring Connor and Unroe for a 5–1 cushion.

Memphis scratched a run back in the ninth. Chase Davis walked and Brody Moore also walked before Noah Mendlinger singled to load the bases. Graysen Tarlow's sacrifice fly made it 5–2, but Jaden Woods induced a game-ending double play from Victor Scott II to earn his fourth save.

The bottom of the second inning decided the game. After Memphis manufactured a run in the top half on a hit-by-pitch, a catcher's interference and a sac fly, Charlotte's three-run response — fuelled by a walk, three singles and a stolen base — flipped the lead and the momentum. The Knights never trailed again.

Shane Murphy (CLT) — Player of the Match: The left-hander scattered four hits over seven innings, walked one and struck out five. He allowed only one unearned run and threw 54 of 78 pitches for strikes, improving to 5–3 on the season with a 5.83 ERA.

Kyle Teel (CLT): The White Sox catcher, rehabbing in Triple-A, went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. His seventh-inning two-bagger broke the game open. Teel is hitting .378 with an .985 OPS in limited action for Charlotte this season.

Riley Unroe (CLT): The second baseman went 1-for-2 with a walk, an RBI single and a run scored, sparking the decisive second inning.

Jurrangelo Cijntje (MEM): The Redbirds right-hander took the loss (0–5) despite a respectable line: 5 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 7 K. His ERA sits at 6.14.

Charlotte out-hit Memphis 9–5 but the game was tighter than the final score suggests. Both teams struck out nine times. The difference came down to efficiency with runners in scoring position: Charlotte went 3-for-10, Memphis just 1-for-8. The Knights also turned three double plays, erasing Memphis scoring threats in the fifth, eighth and ninth innings.

Shane Murphy induced 12 ground-ball outs against five fly balls, working quickly (2:28 total game time) and keeping the Redbirds off-balance with 88–89 mph sinkers.

Charlotte improved to 28–28, climbing back to .500 for the first time since mid-August. They sit 11th in the International League standings. Memphis, at 24–32, are 17th and have lost three of their last four.

The Knights continue their homestand against the Redbirds on Monday, August 31 at Truist Field. Memphis will look to split the series before heading to Nashville.

A straightforward procedural win for Charlotte. Murphy controlled the game from the second inning onward, and the Knights' three-run second frame was all the offence he needed. Teel's bat — on a big-league rehab assignment — was the difference-maker in a game that never felt in doubt after the third inning.
