4th inning — Brewers strike first: Milwaukee scratched across a run against Mets starter Zac Thornton to take a 1-0 lead.

"I already saw that ball down," said Mets interim manager Andy Green, via MLB.com. "It's that deflating feeling when you know the ball's about to land. He came out of nowhere."

10th inning — Hamilton error decides it: Lindor led off the bottom of the 10th at second base under the Manfred runner rule. After a walk loaded the bases, Christopher Morel grounded a ball to third baseman David Hamilton. Hamilton's throw to the plate sailed wide, allowing Lindor to race home with the winning run.

Yan, who earned his first MLB win in his previous outing, ended up on all fours slapping the grass in celebration after the final out.

The game swung twice in the span of three outs. Warren's inability to hold the 2-1 lead in the ninth gave the Brewers new life, but Lindor's diving catch on Hamilton's liner — a ball with a 72.9 mph exit velocity that Statcast gave less than two seconds of reaction time — preserved the tie. Without that play, the Brewers likely score two runs and take a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth. Instead, Yan escaped, and Lindor finished the job an inning later.

• Christian Yelich (MIL) — The game-tying RBI double in the 9th was his second clutch hit of the series against Mets relievers.

The Mets out-hit the Brewers 11-9, a narrow edge that undersells the game's drama. New York's 3-2 walk-off win hinged on two swings (Lindor's HR and Robert Jr.'s HR) and one defensive play (Lindor's catch) rather than sustained offensive pressure. The Brewers' 9th-inning rally was their best sustained threat: they loaded the bases with two outs after Yelich's double before Lindor's heroics. The Mets committed zero errors; Milwaukee's one error — Hamilton's wide throw in the 10th — proved decisive.

The Mets improved to 60-72, still in last place in the NL East with a 0.1% playoff probability per FanGraphs. The Brewers dropped to 82-50 but retain MLB's best record. For the Mets, Lindor's resurgence (.901 OPS over his last 33 games, up from .639) is the most meaningful takeaway for a club whose front office conceded the season at the trade deadline. Next up: the Mets host the Brewers for Game 2 of this series on Wednesday 26 August; Milwaukee then travels to Pittsburgh on 28 August.

A game that on paper — last-place club vs. MLB's best — should have been a footnote became a showcase for Lindor at his best. His diving catch in the ninth was the defensive play of the season for the Mets, and the walk-off finish gave a losing team a rare moment of genuine joy. For the Brewers, a sloppy 10th inning (one error, one walk) cost them against a team they otherwise controlled for most of the night.
