Chicago White Sox vs Texas Rangers

The tone was set in the bottom of the first, and it was chaos. Sam Antonacci opened with a bloop double inside the left-field line, Munetaka Murakami walked, and Miguel Vargas followed with a soft single to left. Rangers left fielder Wyatt Langford attempted to throw Antonacci out at third but airmailed the ball into the White Sox dugout, allowing Antonacci to score and all runners to advance. Braden Montgomery's opposite-field shank made it 2-0, Colson Montgomery walked to load the bases, and Tristan Peters delivered the decisive blow — a 71.3-mph broken-bat flare that died in shallow right field for a two-run double. Brenton Doyle's grounder through a drawn-in infield capped a six-run explosion before deGrom could record a third out.

Jake Burger got one back for Texas with a solo home run in the second, but Chicago answered. Colson Montgomery punched a two-run single through the infield in the fourth, and Antonacci added an RBI triple in the fifth before Vargas drove him home with another single — making it 10-1 and seemingly putting the game to bed.

Peters then became the third White Sox player this season to homer in four consecutive games, depositing a 1-0 changeup inside the right-field foul pole in the sixth for an 11-4 lead.

Texas refused to fold. Danny Jansen crushed a two-run homer over the White Sox bullpen in the fifth, and Ezequiel Durán added an RBI single to cut it to 8-4. In the sixth, Justin Foscue clubbed a two-run homer off Jordan Hicks, and the Rangers trimmed the deficit to 10-7.

Hagen Smith entered for the eighth with an 11-7 lead and worked around a two-out double cleanly, but walked the bases loaded in the ninth. With the tying run at the plate, Will Venable summoned Grant Taylor, who got a chopper to second for the final out — ending a game that should have been comfortable but very nearly was not.

Bryan Hudson was credited with the win after retiring all four batters he faced. Taylor earned the save.

Tristan Peters (CHW): 2-run double in the first, solo home run in the sixth — his fourth straight game with a homer. The broken-bat flare in the first changed the trajectory of the entire game. Player of the match.

Sam Antonacci (CHW): Reached base three times from the leadoff spot, scored three runs. Doubled and tripled, driving in a run and setting the table all night.

Jacob deGrom (TEX): Lasted only part of the first inning, charged with six earned runs on six hits. The outing inflated his ninth loss of the season (9-9).

Jake Burger (TEX) / Danny Jansen (TEX): Burger hit a solo HR; Jansen's two-run blast in the fifth started the Rangers' push back into the game.

The White Sox out-hit the Rangers 14-11, but the damage was concentrated. Chicago went 8-for-18 with runners in scoring position, a staggering rate that explains how they scored 11 runs on just one home run. Texas, by contrast, hit three home runs (Burger, Jansen, Foscue) but still lost — a reminder that solo and two-run homers cannot match the damage of a six-run inning built on sequential singles, walks and a critical error. Anthony Kay threw 99 pitches over 5 innings for Chicago, issuing a walk and his 22nd hit batter of the season, a command line that kept the door open for Texas to creep back.

The win improved the White Sox to 69-63, keeping them in the AL Wild Card conversation. Texas fell to 66-67, their playoff hopes fading with each passing week. Chicago next faces the Rangers again on Wednesday 26 August in the second game of this series, while Texas continues its road trip through the Central time zone.

If Chicago is to make a meaningful postseason push, it must find ways to close games out cleanly — the ninth-inning drama against Hagen Smith was the kind of wobble that cannot repeat in higher-leverage September games.

A game that was decided in the first inning but refused to behave like one. Chicago's offence was relentless early, opportunistic with soft contact and excellent with RISP. The bullpen nearly let it slip away, but the early cushion held. Peters delivered the knockout sequence with his bat, and his four-game homer streak is a story worth tracking.
