Seattle Mariners vs Philadelphia Phillies

Seattle opened the scoring in the second inning. Cal Raleigh crushed his 17th home run of the season, a solo shot to right field off Aaron Nola, putting the Mariners up 1-0.

Philadelphia answered immediately in the top of the second. Bryson Stott singled and came around to score on Justin Crawford's RBI single, tying the game at 1-1.

The score stayed locked until the sixth. Julio Rodriguez led off with a single, stole second (his 17th steal of the season), and scored on Josh Naylor's RBI single to put Seattle ahead 2-1.

The Mariners broke it open in the seventh. Taylor Ward reached on an error, J.P. Crawford singled, and Dominic Canzone delivered a two-out, two-run single to right-centre field, making it 4-1.

After the Phillies tied the game in the second, Kirby retired 14 of the next 15 batters he faced. The only blemish was a Luis Arraez single in the fourth that was immediately erased on a double play. Philadelphia put two runners on in the eighth, but Kirby struck out Bryson Stott on his 92nd and final pitch. Jose Ferrer entered and retired Kyle Schwarber on one pitch to escape the jam.

Seattle's bullpen (Ferrer, Munoz) retired all four batters they faced across 1.1 scoreless innings.

Aaron Nola (L, 5-10) — 6.0 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 7 K, 92 pitches. Left with a 2-1 deficit after a perfectly solid outing that deserved a better fate.

Dominic Canzone — 1-for-3, 2 RBI, the decisive two-out, two-run single in the seventh. Also stole a base.

Andres Munoz (S, 24) — 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K. Locked down the ninth for his 24th save.

Cal Raleigh — 1-for-2, HR (17), 1 RBI, 2 BB. Provided the game's only home run and reached base in three of four plate appearances.

Seattle managed only five hits but walked four times and made them count — four of their five hits drove in runs. Philadelphia out-hit Seattle 6-5 but went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and stranded 10 men on base. Kirby induced eight ground-ball outs against two fly-ball outs, keeping the Phillies' top of the order off balance all night. The Phillies' 1-through-4 hitters (Schwarber, Turner, Harper, Arraez) combined for three singles and no extra-base hits; Bryce Harper had two of them.

Kirby's 6.0 strikeout-to-walk ratio and 92-pitch efficiency marked his most economical start since July. Nola matched him pitch-for-pitch through six but was let down by a bullpen that allowed two earned runs in 0.2 innings.

The win improves Seattle to 64-69, completing a two-game sweep that snapped Philadelphia's nine-game winning streak (which ended Monday). The Phillies fall to 73-60, still second in the NL East but failing to build momentum after their 9-0 surge. Seattle continues its homestand against the Chicago White Sox next. Philadelphia heads to Southern California to face the Los Angeles Angels.

A textbook Kirby start — efficient, ground-ball-heavy, and walk-free — paired with just enough timely hitting to secure the sweep. For a Mariners team clinging to AL West hopes, this is the formula they need to replicate every fifth day down the stretch.
