San Francisco Giants vs Cincinnati Reds

The game was decided early. After Giants starter Adrian Houser worked a scoreless top of the first — stranding Elly De La Cruz at third after his leadoff double — San Francisco loaded the bases against Reds right-hander Brady Singer in the bottom half. Cincinnati finally got on the board in the top of the ninth. With one out, Sal Stewart drove a solo home run to left, his 28th of the season, off Giants closer Carson Seymour. Seymour recovered to strike out Eugenio Suárez swinging, sealing his first career save.

Houser exited after only 1.2 innings and 26 pitches after grimacing and shaking his arm following a 93.9 mph fastball — the second straight game in which a Giants starter left early with a throwing-arm injury. One day earlier, Carson Whisenhunt was diagnosed with a torn UCL requiring Tommy John surgery.

That forced manager Tony Vitello to turn to the bullpen far earlier than planned. Anthony Molina (W, 1-0) entered with one out in the second inning and delivered a career-best outing: 4.1 innings, one hit, no runs, one walk and one strikeout on 52 pitches. He retired 12 of the 14 batters he faced, completely shutting down a Reds lineup that had scored just five runs total across the series.

Without Molina's extended bridge, San Francisco's patchwork pitching plan — already without Whisenhunt, Hayden Birdsong and Trevor McDonald, all out with Tommy John surgeries — could have unravelled. Instead, Sam Hentges and Trent Harris each threw a scoreless frame before Seymour closed it out.

Rafael Devers (Giants): 1-for-3 with a walk, a home run and two runs scored. Devers has now homered in consecutive games and, per the East Bay Times, became just the third Giant all-time with at least 48 home runs in his first 222 games with the franchise, joining Willie Mays (48) and Barry Bonds (61).

Drew Cavanaugh (Giants): 3-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs. The backup catcher reached base four times and delivered the decisive hit in the first inning.

Anthony Molina (Giants): W, 1-0, 4.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K. The 24-year-old right-hander, acquired in the Tyler Mahle trade with Atlanta, produced the longest relief outing of his MLB career in his Giants debut.

Sal Stewart (Reds): 1-for-4, HR (28), RBI (99). The rookie first baseman spoiled the shutout and continues a strong debut season.

Brady Singer (Reds): L, 5-12, 5.2 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 1 HR. Singer settled after a shaky first inning but the early damage was enough to decide the game.

The box score shows a clean game. The Giants out-hit the Reds 8–4 and held Cincinnati to one hit through the first eight innings. San Francisco's win was built on early aggression (two runs in the first on just one hit, aided by two hit batters and a walk) and shutdown relief.

The Reds managed just four hits — their lowest output of the series — and only one extra-base hit after De La Cruz's first-inning double. For a team that entered the night averaging 4.6 runs per game in August, the bats went quiet at precisely the wrong time across the three games in San Francisco.

Nate Furman recorded his first MLB hit, a single in the third inning.

The Giants improved to 54–78, still well out of postseason contention but having won consecutive games for the first time since August 13–14. They will look to complete the sweep on Wednesday, handing the ball to Landen Roupp (7–13, 4.34 ERA) against Nick Lodolo (3–3, 5.04 ERA), first pitch at 12:45 p.m. PT.

The Reds dropped to 62–71 and lost further ground in the National League Central, where Milwaukee (81–50) leads, followed by Chicago (76–56) and St. Louis (66–66). Cincinnati next faces the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on August 28.

The Giants' injury concerns deepen. Whisenhunt's Tommy John surgery was announced on Tuesday, and Houser's status is unclear. Spencer Bivens has been called up, with Tristan Beck and Matt Wilkinson also candidates for promotion.

A game decided in the first inning and sealed by the bullpen. Molina's extended relief stint was the story of the night — without it, a Giants rotation already in crisis mode would have been exposed. Devers continues to provide consistent power in a lineup that ranks 28th in MLB runs scored, while Cincinnati's hitters had no answer for San Francisco's relievers. Singer's early control issues (two hit batters in the first) proved fatal against a team that capitalises when given extra outs.
