Elmer Rodriguez (Yankees): ND. Six-plus innings, three runs (two earned), six strikeouts in his first major-league start since June 21. Manager Aaron Boone said pre-game that Rodriguez "probably pitched his best baseball over the last month" at Triple-A — that form translated.

The final scoreline — Yankees 9, Astros 3 — makes it look one-sided, but through six innings it was a one-run game. New York out-hit Houston 13-4, though the disparity was driven almost entirely by the seventh and eighth innings (six of the Yankees' 13 hits came after the sixth). The Astros managed just one hit after the fourth inning. Blackburn's Houdini act in the top of the seventh, escaping a second-and-third, no-out jam without further damage, was the difference between a 3-3 tie and a potential Houston lead — and Sousa's inability to record outs in the bottom half turned a tie into a blowout.

The win evens the series at 1-1 after Houston took Tuesday's opener 9-7. The Astros, at 66-67 per Baseball Reference, need wins to stay alive in the postseason race. The Yankees will go for the series win in Thursday's rubber match.

A game that lived on a knife-edge for six innings was settled by one bullpen that made pitches and one that didn't. Blackburn's escape bought Bellinger the moment, and Bellinger delivered. The Yankees' bottom of the order — Rice, Garcia Jr., Chisholm — combined for seven hits, six walks and seven runs, an avalanche that buried Houston inside 15 minutes of game time.
