Washington Nationals vs Colorado Rockies

The fifth inning flipped the game. Washington starter Matt Waldron had kept the Rockies scoreless through four, but after he departed, Dion could not contain the lineup. Johnston's two-run homer broke a 1-1 tie, and Carrigg's shot three batters later gave Colorado a three-run cushion before Norby's grand slam buried the Nationals completely.

Gordon's ability to reset after Chaparro's leadoff homer was equally decisive. After yielding extra-base hits in each of the first three innings, the right-hander retired 10 of the final 12 batters he faced. At 0-1 counts, he threw strikes on 14 of 15 pitches — a ratio Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer called "elite."

Connor Norby (COL) — Player of the Match: 2-for-5, grand slam (6th HR), 5 RBIs. Promoted from Triple-A Albuquerque on Aug. 11, Norby has reached base in all 14 games since and extended his hitting streak to 11 games. His 402-foot grand slam was the decisive blow.

Tanner Gordon (COL): W (1-4) — 7 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K. A career-high in innings pitched. The 28-year-old righty, acquired from the Braves at the 2023 Trade Deadline, dominated after the second inning by leaning on his fastball-changeup combination. "I'm slowly getting back into my routine, and that has helped a ton," Gordon said.

Hunter Goodman (COL): 2-for-5, two-run homer (36th), 2 RBIs. His team-leading 36th homer ties him among MLB's top power hitters this season.

Andrés Chaparro (WAS): 1-for-4, solo homer. Provided Washington's only run.

The box score shows Colorado with 15 hits to Washington's seven, a fair reflection of the game's one-sided nature. But the timing tells the story: the Rockies collected 13 of their 15 hits and all 13 runs from the fifth inning onward. Before the fifth, Washington had held Colorado to two hits and led 1-0.

Colorado's .400 average with runners in scoring position (6-for-15) contrasted sharply with Washington's 0-for-5. The Rockies' four home runs produced 10 of the 13 runs.

Gordon's 5.75 ERA entering the night reflected a season of role-switching between the bullpen and rotation. Wednesday marked his first true quality start since rejoining the rotation after the Rockies designated Michael Lorenzen for assignment on Aug. 18. He threw 14 of 15 strikes at 0-1 counts — a "get ahead, stay ahead, kill" approach that first-year pitching coach Alon Leichman has preached all season.

The Rockies improved to 25-39 on the road this season, their 25 road wins the franchise's highest total since 2022 (27). At 56-77 overall, Colorado is playing for development and rotation roles for 2027. Gordon has positioned himself to hold a rotation spot down the stretch.

Washington fell to 62-73. The Nationals have lost four of their last six and remain in fifth place in the NL East, 16 games back of the division lead.

A routine blowout on the scoreboard — but a meaningful one for the Rockies. Gordon's seven-inning gem and Norby's continued emergence since his Aug. 11 call-up give Colorado two reasons to believe the final month has value beyond draft position. For Washington, another game defined by a single early homer and not much else.
