Seattle Mariners vs Philadelphia Phillies

Philadelphia struck immediately. After Kyle Schwarber led off the game with a double, Harper crushed a 1-0 fastball from Woo into the seats in right-centre field for a two-run home run — his 27th of the season — giving the Phillies a 2-0 lead in the first.

The Phillies broke the game open in the second. Bryson Stott doubled and Brandon Marsh walked before Justin Crawford — the rookie centre-fielder — lined an RBI single to left to make it 3-0. One batter later, Schwarber deposited a three-run homer to right-centre, his 40th of the year, extending the lead to 6-0.

Seattle managed just two hits all night — a single from Randy Arozarena and another from Jhonny Pereda — and never advanced a runner past second base.

The game was effectively over the moment Luzardo took the mound with a six-run lead after two innings. But the knockout sequence came in the bottom of the second, when Luzardo struck out Cal Raleigh — who had homered in four consecutive at-bats across the first two games of the series — on three pitches to end the inning. Raleigh finished 0-for-4 with four strikeouts.

Luzardo faced just one batter over the minimum from the third inning onward, retiring 13 of the final 14 hitters he faced.

Bryce Harper, PHI: 2-for-4, R, 2 RBI, HR (27), 2B. Harper also made a leaping catch at the right-field wall in the first inning to rob Julio Rodríguez of extra bases, extending his on-base streak to 28 games.

Bryan Woo, SEA (L, 9-9): 1.2 IP, 6 H, 6 ER, 1 BB, 1 K. Woo's first home loss of the season snapped a personal seven-game winning streak at T-Mobile Park.

The 10-to-2 hits disparity reflects a game Luzardo controlled entirely. Philadelphia's 1.30 WHIP defence (ranked 7th in MLB entering the game) backed him cleanly, while Seattle's offence — which ranked 29th in runs scored (526) — mustered only a .067 batting average against Luzardo's four-seamer and changeup combination.

Cal Raleigh, who had slugged four home runs in his previous four at-bats entering the game, went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts — all swinging. The Mariners' two hits were their fewest in a game since being no-hit on 8 July 2025.

The win improved the Phillies to 74-60 and kept them within 4.5 games of the Braves in the NL East, while maintaining a three-game cushion for the top Wild Card spot. The Mariners dropped to 64-70 and fell 3.5 games behind the Astros in the AL West.

Philadelphia heads to Atlanta for a critical four-game set starting 28 August. Seattle travels to Oakland to face the Athletics on the same day.

A thorough, professional response from a Phillies team that had lost two close games to open the series. Luzardo delivered his best start of the second half at the exact moment Philadelphia needed it, and the early power display from Harper and Schwarber rendered the outcome academic by the second inning. Seattle's offence, reliant on the long ball, had no counterpunch against a left-hander in command.
