Washington Nationals vs Colorado Rockies

Washington struck first against Rockies rookie right-hander Gabriel Hughes (0-6). In the bottom of the first, CJ Abrams singled and scored on a Lile single to shallow centre. Dylan Crews moved to third on the play and came home on Brady House's sacrifice fly to left, making it 2-0 after one.

Colorado answered in the third. Willi Castro singled and advanced to third on a TJ Rumfield single and a Troy Johnston base hit before Brett Sullivan punched a single through the right side to plate Castro. That cut the lead to 2-1 and loaded the bases with two outs, but Jake Irvin struck out Connor Norby to escape the jam.

Washington restored its two-run cushion in the fourth when Jacob Young scored on a Dylan Crews groundout — a call upheld after review. Lile then led off the fifth by crushing his 18th home run of the season to right field, pushing the lead to 4-1.

The Nationals broke it open in the eighth. Lile singled, moved to second on a walk, and scored on House's RBI double to deep right. Ruiz followed by launching his ninth home run — a two-run shot to right — to cap the scoring at 7-1.

The top of the fifth was the game's decisive moment. With the Rockies trailing 3-1, they loaded the bases with one out against Irvin. But Irvin exited at 93 pitches, and reliever Tom Cosgrove (1-2) entered to face Jordan Beck, who fouled out. Cosgrove then induced a groundout from Ezequiel Tovar to end the threat. Colorado never placed another runner in scoring position.

Cosgrove earned the win with 1.2 scoreless innings, striking out two across 19 pitches.

Daylen Lile, LF, Nationals — 3-for-4 with two runs, two RBI, a walk and his 18th home run. Lile, batting .429 over his past five games entering Thursday, continued his hottest stretch of the season. He was named Player of the Game.

Keibert Ruiz, C, Nationals — 2-for-5 with his ninth home run and three RBI. Ruiz's eighth-inning blast was the exclamation point on a bullpen day that saw Colorado use three relievers across the final four innings.

Tom Cosgrove, RP, Nationals — 1.2 IP, 1 BB, 2 SO. Inherited a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the fifth and retired both batters faced to preserve the two-run lead.

Jake Irvin, SP, Nationals — 4.1 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 5 BB, 4 SO, 93 pitches. Irvin's command wavered — he walked five — but he limited damage and handed the ball to a bullpen that delivered 4.2 scoreless innings.

Gabriel Hughes, SP, Rockies — 4.1 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 4 BB, 3 SO, 85 pitches. Hughes fell to 0-6 in his rookie campaign. While his expected metrics (3.46 xERA entering the game) suggest better results ahead, his control issues — four walks on top of eight hits — proved costly.

Washington out-hit Colorado 13-5, a gap that undersells the Nationals' efficiency with runners in scoring position. The Rockies loaded the bases in the first and the third but scored only once across those two opportunities. The 5.89 combined runs fell comfortably under the 9.5 over/under.

Both teams played clean defence (zero errors), but Washington's bullpen dominance was the decisive split. Four Nationals relievers combined for 4.2 scoreless innings. Colorado's relief trio — Juan Mejia, Jimmy Herget and Justin Lawrence — surrendered three runs in the eighth alone.

Washington (63-73) claimed a series split after dropping the previous two games by a combined 16-2. The Nationals sit fourth in the NL East, 15.5 games back of the first-place Phillies.

Colorado (52-82) fell back after consecutive wins for the first time since snapping a seven-game skid. The Rockies travel to Atlanta to open a three-game series against the Braves on Friday, August 28 at 7:15 p.m. ET. The Nationals host the Chicago Cubs on Friday, August 28 with a 7:05 p.m. ET first pitch.

A straightforward afternoon at Nationals Park: Irvin bent but did not break, the bullpen shut the door, and Washington's middle-of-the-order bats delivered when it mattered. For Colorado, the momentum from Wednesday's 13-run outburst evaporated against a reliever who entered with a 5.40 ERA — a reminder that this roster's margin for error is razor-thin.
