After Ha-Seong Kim reached scoring position, Yamamoto struck out Baldwin and got Ozzie Albies to pop out, escaping the jam. The Dodgers never mounted a threat of equal consequence against Sale, who retired the side in order in four of nine innings.

"It felt weird out there, because I felt like I had a little something else helping me tonight," Sale said postgame, dedicating the performance to a family friend. "There's no question, that was her out there."

"That's probably one of the top two pitching performances I've seen during my time in the big leagues," Baldwin said of Sale.

The box score shows a classic pitchers' duel: Braves managed only four hits and the Dodgers five, with neither team committing an error. Yamamoto issued just one walk and Sale none. The underlying story is Sale's dominance in the strike zone — he threw first-pitch strikes to 22 of 30 batters and never faced a three-ball count in a high-leverage spot. The Dodgers put the leadoff man on base in just two innings, and neither runner advanced past second base. Against the reigning champs, Sale was untouchable.

The sweep pulls the Braves (80-55) into a tie with the Dodgers (80-55) in the battle for the second of the National League's two first-round byes. Atlanta has won five straight and 10 of its past 14. The loss snaps a four-game winning streak for Los Angeles.

The Braves host the Colorado Rockies on Saturday, August 29 at Truist Park. The Dodgers travel to Detroit to face the Tigers, with newly acquired left-hander Tarik Skubal starting against his former team on Friday, August 28.

Sale's performance ranks among the finest of his Hall of Fame-calibre career. The Braves, on a five-game roll and now deadlocked with the Dodgers in the standings, have shown they can go toe-to-toe with the best in the National League. For Los Angeles, this is a bump — not a crisis — but the margin for error in the NL bye race just got thinner.
