San Francisco Giants vs Arizona Diamondbacks

Drew Gilbert put the Giants ahead in the bottom of the first, launching a full-count fastball over the right-field wall for a solo home run — his 3rd of the season.

Arizona answered in the top of the fourth when Gabriel Moreno deposited a full-count pitch to left field for his 11th home run, knotting the game at 1-1.

The score stayed tied until the bottom of the fifth. Christian Koss scored from third on Gilbert's sacrifice fly to left fielder Max Kepler, giving San Francisco a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish.

The game remained tight until the bottom of the eighth, when the Giants broke it open with four runs on four hits off the Arizona bullpen. Jung Hoo Lee — pinch-hitting for Tyler Furman — worked a 10-pitch walk to spark the rally. Rafael Devers singled Lee to third, then Bryce Eldridge doubled to left to score Lee. Jonah Cox singled to center to bring home Devers. Turner Hill followed with an RBI single to right, scoring Eldridge, and Shay Whitcomb's sacrifice fly plated Cox to cap the scoring at 6-1.

The eighth inning was decisive. Before Lee's 10-pitch walk off Kevin Ginkel, the game was a taut 2-1 battle. Arizona's bullpen had held the Giants scoreless in the sixth and seventh, but Ginkel's inability to finish off Lee opened the floodgates. By the time the Diamondbacks recorded their second out of the inning, four runs had crossed the plate.

• Drew Gilbert (SF): Player of the Match. 1-for-3, solo HR (3rd), sacrifice fly, 2 RBI. Set the tone with the first-inning home run and added a productive out with the go-ahead sac fly in the fifth.
• Landen Roupp (SF): 6.0 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, 4 K (W, 5-7). Roupp improved to 5-7 on the season with a quality start, his 12th of the year.
• Gabriel Moreno (ARI): 1-for-3 with a walk, solo HR (11th). His fourth-inning blast was the only damage Arizona could muster.
• Bryce Eldridge (SF): 1-for-4, double, RBI. The 20-year-old rookie's eighth-inning double was the key hit in the four-run rally.
• Jose Cabrera (ARI): 5.0 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 4 K (L, 0-3). Cabrera kept Arizona in the game through five but took the loss.

The Giants managed only seven hits but turned them into six runs — a reflection of clutch situational hitting (4-for-8 with RISP). Arizona also had six hits but went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position, leaving seven men on base. San Francisco's bullpen tandem of Carson Seymour (1.0 IP) and Ryan Walker (1.0 IP) combined for two scoreless innings to close it out. The game took 2 hours, 49 minutes.

The Giants improved to 55-79, still firmly in fourth place in the NL West. For Arizona, the loss dropped them to 71-64 as they continue to chase a wild-card berth — now 3.5 games back of the final spot with 27 games remaining. The Diamondbacks will send left-hander Kohl Drake (0-1, 5.40) to the mound against Giants right-hander Blade Tidwell (0-0, 3.58) on Friday night at Oracle Park in the second game of this four-game series.

A crisply played ballgame that turned on one extended at-bat. Lee's 10-pitch walk was the true separator — a professional plate appearance that cracked open a game that was otherwise trending toward a tense finish. The Giants executed when it mattered; the Diamondbacks didn't.
