It was the first time Lavender allowed an inherited runner to score in his first 10 Mets appearances.

Hunter Brown, SP, Astros — Player of the Match Brown (4-3) threw 102 pitches, allowed five hits and one walk, and punched out 10. He became the first Astros starter since 10 August to complete six innings — a critical length for a bullpen that had been overworked.

Daulton Varsho, CF, Astros Varsho went 1-for-4 with two RBIs, the decisive knock coming in the sixth. His two-run single had a 94.1 mph exit velocity and turned the game on a single pitch.

Christian Scott, SP, Mets Scott (4-4) held Houston to one hit through 5 1/3 but walked five and was charged with all three runs. He had entered with a 3.55 ERA across his previous six starts.

Francisco Lindor, SS, Mets Lindor scored New York's only run on Benge's double in the fourth. He finished 1-for-4 with a strikeout.

The Mets out-hit Houston 5-4 but never generated a sustained threat. Houston's 4 hits were all singles except for none — they manufactured their three-run sixth on three singles, two walks and a hit-by-pitch, a sequence that punished Scott's loss of command.

Brown's 10 strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings meant he recorded 60% of his outs via the K, a rate that kept Mets baserunners stationary. Only two Mets reached scoring position after the fourth inning.

Hader's 20th save extended his perfect conversion streak, giving him a 0.00 blown-save rate in 20 chances this season. Abreu's 1 1/3 innings of relief lowered his August ERA to 1.80.

The Astros (68-67) moved one game ahead of the Texas Rangers in the AL West at the close of play. At 60-75, the Mets have lost three straight and sit fifth in the NL East, 26 games behind the division lead. Houston continues its three-game series at Citi Field on Saturday afternoon, with RHP Nolan McLean (9-8, 3.21 ERA) scheduled for the Mets against an Astros starter yet to be announced. For the Mets, the margin for error in a lost season narrows further with each defeat.

Hunter Brown delivered exactly the start Houston needed — deep, dominant and economical — and the Astros bullpen sealed it without drama. Scott's walk-induced sixth inning was the difference in an otherwise well-pitched game. For a team clinging to a one-game division lead, these are the kind of road wins that define a September push.
