Toronto Blue Jays vs Seattle Mariners

Through four outings in a Toronto uniform he's 1-1 with a 4.22 ERA and 1.50 WHIP, striking out 16 across 21.1 IP. His last start on August 23 against the Yankees produced eight strikeouts — his highest total since the trade — but also three earned runs across 5.1 IP. Soriano spent 3.5 seasons in the AL West with the Angels and has extensive history against these Mariners hitters.

One red flag: Julio Rodríguez. The Mariners' centre fielder is 10-for-18 (.556) with two home runs and five RBIs against Soriano in his career. Rodríguez bats third this afternoon.

Kade Anderson (LHP, 0-0, 4.76 ERA) — The Mariners' No. 1 prospect per MLB Pipeline and the third overall pick in the 2025 MLB Draft makes his second career big-league start. The 22-year-old left-hander debuted on August 22 against the Cubs: 5.2 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 81 pitches (no-decision).

Anderson's minor-league numbers are eye-popping: 18 Double-A starts with Arkansas produced a 10-1 record, 1.06 ERA, 0.64 WHIP and 135 strikeouts in 93.1 IP. Opponents hit .147 against him. The jump from that to MLB lineups is severe, but his first outing suggested he belongs.

Anderson is a lefty, and Toronto's only left-handed bat in the lineup is rookie leadoff man Brett Bateman. The 24-year-old has hit .400 (10-for-25) against left-handers through his first 17 career games, so manager John Schneider has kept him in the leadoff spot.

The key matchup is the Blue Jays' right-handed heavy lineup (Vladimir Guerrero Jr., George Springer, Kazuma Okamoto, Ernie Clement) against Anderson's breaking ball. Toronto sits 24th in MLB in strikeout rate (24.6%) — a vulnerability Anderson could exploit if his stuff plays as advertised.

For Soriano, the danger zone is Rodríguez in the three-hole, but the broader concern is walks. Soriano's 65 walks in 144.1 IP (4.05 BB/9) rank among the league's highest for qualified starters. The Mariners' offence doesn't punish walks consistently (22nd in OBP), but free baserunners against a pitch-to-contact profile is a bad combination.

George Springer (TOR, DH) — Has hit safely in four of his last five games. Career .251/.326/.415 this season, but brings 14 years of experience against young arms.

Randy Arozarena (SEA, LF) — Batting leadoff for Seattle. The former All-Star carries a .273/.372/.461 line with 20 homers. Has a history of punishing right-handed pitching.

Kazuma Okamoto (TOR, 3B) — The Japanese import leads Toronto with 27 home runs (tied for 9th in AL). Anderson's fly-ball tendencies (3 GB: 6 AO in his debut) could be dangerous if Okamoto catches one.

Soriano enters as the more experienced and statistically proven arm, but his walk rate and the Rodríguez factor create vulnerability. Anderson has immense talent but just one MLB start to his name — his 1.06 ERA in Double-A suggests elite stuff, but the sample is limited.

Toronto's offence showed life on Friday and faces a left-handed rookie for the second time in his career. The Blue Jays' bullpen has been solid — Louis Varland (30 saves, 1.20 ERA) locks things down when ahead — but the Mariners' pen has a 4.28 team ERA and 8 blown saves.

Key question: can Anderson survive the Blue Jays' right-handed heavy order through the lineup a second time?

Toronto has the momentum, the venue, and the more proven starter. Seattle has nothing to lose and a top prospect with electric minor-league numbers. If Anderson navigates the Blue Jays' right-handed bats effectively for five-plus innings, this gets interesting. But the expectation is Soriano gives Toronto a competitive start and the offence builds on Friday's breakout.
