Tampa Bay Rays vs San Diego Padres

Trailing 6-3 entering the bottom of the seventh, the Tampa Bay Rays scored four runs — aided by a critical throwing error — to stun the San Diego Padres 7-6 and clinch the series at Tropicana Field. The win improved the Rays to an MLB-best 81-54, while the Padres slipped to 72-64.

Machado greeted him with a two-run single to centre, scoring Harris and Rengifo to make it 5-3. Tatis then stole home in a double-steal with Machado, extending the lead to 6-3.

The Rays' decisive rally came against Bradgley Rodriguez. The Padres reliever faced four batters without recording an out: Richie Palacios walked, Cedric Mullins singled, Taylor Walls singled to load the bases, and Yandy Díaz lined a bases-clearing single to deep centre. Luis Rengifo's throwing error on the play allowed Díaz to advance to third and all three runs scored — Palacios, Mullins and Walls — tying the game 6-6.

Adrian Morejon relieved Rodriguez and intentionally walked Caminero. After Ryan Vilade struck out, Chandler Simpson singled to left, scoring pinch-runner Jorge Mateo with the go-ahead run.

Bryan Baker pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his 39th save.

Rodriguez faced four batters and retired none. The Padres' right-hander inherited a 6-3 lead and left with the game tied 6-6, having allowed three hits, a walk, and three earned runs without recording an out. The throwing error by Rengifo on Díaz's single was the decisive break — it turned a potential two-run single into a three-run, game-tying hit.
