Cleveland Guardians vs Kansas City Royals

Cleveland struck first in the bottom of the 2nd. Jo Adell drew a one-out walk and Angel Martínez crushed a 1-0 pitch from Daniel Lynch IV to left field for a two-run homer, his 13th of the season, putting the Guardians ahead 2-0.

Royals starter Lynch IV settled in after that but departed after 3.1 innings (3 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 70 pitches).

Kansas City tied it in the 5th. Nick Loftin led off with a double, Tyler Tolbert singled him to third, and Isaac Collins roped a two-run double to left-centre, scoring both runners and knotting the game at 2-2.

The game swung decisively in the 6th. After Foster Griffin (5.0 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 4 K, 82 pitches) was lifted for Colin Holderman, the Royals ambushed the Guardians bullpen.

Bobby Witt Jr. singled, Jac Caglianone singled, and Salvador Perez ripped an RBI double to put Kansas City ahead 3-2. Nick Loftin reached on an infield single, and John Rave's fielder's choice brought Caglianone home on a throwing error by José Ramírez. Josh Rojas — pinch-hitting for Matthew Lugo — then lined a two-run single to left, scoring Rave and Loftin to make it 6-2.

Rojas struck again in the 8th, crushing a two-run homer to right off Logan Allen, pushing the lead to 8-2.

Cleveland scratched a run in the 9th on an RBI single by Martínez that scored Ramírez, but Alex Lange closed it out.

Josh Rojas (KC) — Player of the Match. The utility infielder entered as a pinch-hitter in the 6th and went 2-for-2 with a single, a two-run homer, and 4 RBI. His two-run single broke the game open, and his 8th-inning homer put it out of reach.

Anthony Gose (KC) — W (1-0). The left-hander inherited a 2-2 tie in the 4th and fired 1.2 scoreless innings, retiring all five batters he faced on 18 pitches (14 strikes). He earned the win in relief.

Angel Martínez (CLE) — 2-for-4, HR (13), 3 RBI. Provided all of Cleveland's offence with a two-run homer in the 2nd and a 9th-inning RBI single.

Salvador Perez (KC) — 2-for-5, two doubles, 1 RBI, 1 R. His RBI double in the 6th put the Royals ahead to stay.

The box score shows a clean game through four innings (CLE led 2-0) before the Royals erupted for 6 runs on 5 hits in the 6th alone. Kansas City finished with 12 hits to Cleveland's 5 — a 7-hit gap that reflects the Guardians' inability to sustain pressure after the 2nd. Cleveland went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position after the 2nd inning. The Royals went 5-for-15 with RISP and scored in four separate innings (5th, 6th, 8th). Defensive miscues hurt Cleveland: José Ramírez's throwing error in the 6th allowed an unearned run. The Guardians left six runners on base and managed just five hits all afternoon.

The loss drops Cleveland to 68-68, back to .500 for the first time since August 25. The Guardians entered the day clinging to the third AL wild-card spot but saw their hold loosen. Kansas City improved to 62-75, still last in the AL Central, but have now won 12 of their last 14 games — a remarkable turnaround from a season that looked lost a month ago.

The series concludes Sunday with Game 3 on August 30 at 1:40 PM ET (17:40 UTC) at Progressive Field. Probable pitchers have not been announced at the time of writing.

Cleveland's bullpen — a strength for much of the season — unravelled at the worst moment. Holderman faced five batters and didn't record an out, turning a 2-2 tie into a 6-2 deficit. Rojas's breakout game off the bench typifies a Kansas City team playing with confidence, while the Guardians' .500 record reflects an offence that scored just 3 runs on 5 hits and couldn't capitalise on an early lead.
