San Francisco Giants vs Arizona Diamondbacks

Bottom 1 — SF 1-0: Jonah Cox reached and scored on Bryce Eldridge's single to shallow left.

Top 3 — Tied 1-1: Lars Nootbaar doubled to left, scoring Ildemaro Vargas from first after left fielder Grant McCray misplayed the ball on a sliding attempt.

Bottom 5 — SF 4-1: The Giants broke it open with a three-run rally. After singles from Grant McCray, Drew Gilbert and Osleivis Basabe loaded the bases, Rafael Devers singled to right-centre to plate McCray. Gilbert and Basabe also scored on the sequence of hits.

Top 7 — SF 4-2: Arizona scratched a run across off the Giants bullpen.

Bottom 7 — SF 5-2: San Francisco answered immediately.

Bottom 8 — SF 7-2: Two insurance runs — including Eldridge's fourth RBI of the night — sealed the result.

The three-run fifth inning was decisive. After Marte exited following 4.2 innings of one-run ball, the offence immediately rewarded him. Mitch Bratt (1-3), who had settled in after a rocky first, couldn't escape the fifth and the Giants turned a 1-1 tie into a 4-1 lead they never surrendered.

Bryce Eldridge (SF) — Player of the Match: Matched his career highs with four hits and four RBIs. Since a mid-August meeting about his approach, the rookie is hitting .327/.382/.582 with four homers and 14 RBIs in his last 18 games.

Yunior Marte (SF): MLB debut from Double-A Richmond — the second Giants prospect to make that leap this season. Allowed one run over 4.2 innings with two strikeouts and no walks. Acquired in the Mike Yastrzemski trade at the 2025 deadline.

Rafael Devers (SF): Multiple hits including the go-ahead RBI single in the fifth. Combined with Eldridge for six hits and six RBIs.

Reiver Sanmartin (SF): Earned the win (2-0) with scoreless relief.

Lars Nootbaar (ARI): Followed his Game 1 grand slam with an RBI double in Game 2. Since 19 August, Nootbaar is 8-for-23 (.348) with three homers.

Arizona scored in just two innings (3rd and 7th) and never led. San Francisco's nine hits to Arizona's seven reflects a modest edge, but the Giants' three-run fifth was the only crooked number of the night — a sharp contrast to Game 1, where all of Arizona's runs came in a four-run seventh.

Marte's debut (4.2 IP, 1 ER) saw his fastball sit mid-90s, touching 97 mph. He became the second Giants pitcher this season to jump from Double-A to a start, after Jonah Cox.

Giants (56-81, 4th NL West): Snapped a two-game losing streak. With 30 August now an off-day following the doubleheader rescheduling, the Giants travel to Atlanta to face the Braves on Monday, 31 August. The emergence of Marte, Eldridge and Matt "Tugboat" Wilkinson provides a silver lining for a lost season.

Diamondbacks (73-65, 3rd NL West): A 2-2 series split in San Francisco. Arizona maintained its half-game lead for the third NL Wild Card spot. Ketel Marte (knee) is expected back from the IL on Monday, 31 August, when the D-backs open a three-game homestand against the Philadelphia Phillies at Chase Field (6:40 p.m. MT). Zac Gallen and Corbin Burnes both began rehab assignments on Saturday, offering rotation help down the stretch.

A day-night doubleheader that showcased two different narratives. Game 1 belonged to Nootbaar's heroics and Kelly's vintage pitching. Game 2 was about the Giants' young core — Marte, Eldridge and Devers — proving they can hang with a playoff contender. The split was a fair outcome, but Arizona's path to October looks clearer with reinforcements on the way.
