Toronto Blue Jays vs Seattle Mariners

Scherzer, making his seventh start for the Blue Jays since returning from injury, set the tone immediately by striking out the side in the first inning — Randy Arozarena, Dominic Canzone and Julio Rodríguez all went down swinging.

Toronto broke the game open in the eighth against Nick Davila. George Springer doubled, Nathan Lukes was hit by a pitch and Okamoto walked to load the bases. Andrés Giménez singled to centre to score two, and Bateman added an RBI double to left for the 7-0 final.

The game was effectively decided in the first inning when Scherzer struck out the side and Kirk followed with a two-run homer. Seattle never mounted a serious threat: after Raleigh's double with two outs in the fourth, Scherzer struck out Josh Naylor to end the inning, and the Mariners did not put another runner in scoring position until the eighth, long after the outcome was settled.

Alejandro Kirk: 2-for-4, HR (8), 2 RBI, BB. The catcher opened the scoring with his two-run blast in the first and added a single in the third.

Kazuma Okamoto: 1-for-3, HR (9), 2 RBI, BB, 2 R. The Japanese slugger's sixth-inning solo shot off Speier extended the lead and he later scored on Bateman's double in the eighth.

Blue Jays bullpen (Spencer Miles, Braydon Fisher): 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K. Miles and Fisher each struck out two in scoreless relief to preserve the shutout.

The 1-hit shutout was Toronto's best pitching performance of the season. The Mariners struck out 15 times — a season high for a Blue Jays pitching staff — and managed just three baserunners all afternoon (Raleigh's double, a Taylor Ward walk in the second and a Cole Young walk in the eighth). Toronto's offence, meanwhile, went 5-for-12 with runners in scoring position, consistently capitalising on Seattle's pitching mistakes.

The disparity in output was stark: the Mariners' lone extra-base hit was Raleigh's double, while the Blue Jays had five (two doubles, two homers). Seattle mustered no pressure after the fourth inning as Scherzer retired 11 of his final 12 batters.

The sweep lifts Toronto to 68-70, keeping faint wild-card hopes alive in a crowded American League race. The Blue Jays have won three in a row for the first time since mid-August. Seattle falls to 64-73, 9.5 games back of a wild-card spot with the season winding down.

Toronto opens a three-game series against the Cleveland Guardians at home on Monday (1 September). The Mariners travel to Oakland for a three-game set against the Athletics starting Monday.

Scherzer delivered the kind of vintage performance the Blue Jays envisioned when they signed him — seven innings of one-hit ball with double-digit strikeouts and total control. The offence gave him early support and never let up. For Seattle, a lifeless afternoon at the plate capped a sweep that effectively ends any realistic playoff push.
