Las Vegas Aviators vs Sugar Land

The Aviators jumped ahead in the first inning when Joey Meneses crushed a 2-run home run (his 15th of the season, 433 ft) off Sugar Land starter Mike Burrows. Las Vegas carried that 2-0 lead into the fourth, when a chaotic sequence — a César Salazar double, a wild pitch, a Pascanel Ferreras groundout, a Matt Thaiss double and a Lucas Spence single — tied the game at 2-2.

The score stayed level until the bottom of the fifth. Johnathan Rodríguez launched a 464-ft solo home run to dead centre field (his 2nd of the year) to put Las Vegas back ahead 3-2. Then the floodgates opened. Reliever Ryan Weiss entered and faced five batters without recording an out: two hits, three walks and four earned runs later, Drew Swift laced a 2-run double and Diaz added an RBI single to stretch the lead to 7-2.

Sugar Land answered immediately. Ferreras and Spence went back-to-back solo shots in the top of the sixth off starter Ryan Magdic — Ferreras's fourth and Spence's second — trimming the deficit to 7-4. But the Aviators extinguished any comeback hopes in the bottom half.

With the bases loaded and two outs in the sixth, Diaz turned on a 95.5-mph fastball from Michael Knorr and sent it 409 ft over the wall for a grand slam — his first home run at any professional level above High-A. The six RBIs tied a single-game career high for the Vanderbilt product, and the blast made it 11-4, effectively ending the contest.

Diaz entered the game with just seven RBIs in 33 Triple-A games this season; Wednesday alone nearly matched his season total from his previous 16 games.

• Joey Meneses (LV): 2-4, 2-run HR (15th), BB, 2 RBI, 2 R. The veteran first baseman set the tone in the first inning.
• Ryan Magdic (LV): W (1-2), 6.0 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 7 K, 93 pitches. Held the game together long enough for the offence to erupt.
• Johnathan Rodríguez (LV): 2-4, solo HR (2nd), HBP, 2 R. His 464-ft blast was the hardest-hit ball of the night.
• Cavan Biggio (SUG): 1-3, solo HR (17th), BB, HBP, R. The veteran utility man continues to produce for Sugar Land despite the loss.

The Aviators' 12 hits produced 11 runs, a rate driven by three home runs and a perfect 4-for-4 with runners in scoring position in the fifth and sixth innings. The six home runs in the game — two by Las Vegas, two by Sugar Land in the sixth, then one each by Diaz and Biggio — made it a true PCL slugfest at altitude. Each team struck out seven times off opposing starters, but the bullpens told the story: Las Vegas's James Gonzalez and Yunior Tur combined for 3 innings of 1-run ball (Tur allowed Biggio's solo shot in the ninth), while Sugar Land relievers Weiss, Christian Roa and Michael Knorr were tagged for 8 earned runs in 2.2 innings.

Las Vegas improved to 73-53 (.579) and strengthened its hold on a PCL playoff spot after clinching a berth on June 20. Sugar Land dropped to 66-61 (.520), now 5 games behind first place in the PCL East with the regular season winding down. The two sides continue their six-game set Thursday night (7:05 PM PT at Las Vegas Ballpark).

A blowout that looked like a nail-biter until Diaz's grand slam. The Aviators' offence flexed its depth — six different players drove in runs, and the bottom of the order (Diaz, Swift, Cole Conn) produced nine RBIs between them. For Sugar Land, the bullpen meltdown erased a gutsy start from Burrows and back-to-back homers that briefly made it a game. Las Vegas simply had too much firepower on the night.
