Reno Aces vs Sacramento River Cats

Reno jumped on River Cats starter Joe Whitman (L, 3-4) early. LuJames Groover walked and scored on a Tyler Locklear RBI single in the first inning. Christian Cerda doubled and scored on a Pavin Smith RBI double in the second for a 2-0 lead.

Manuel Pena went 3-for-4 and drove in a run in the sixth. Gavin Conticello added an RBI double in a two-run seventh that put the game out of reach at 5-0. The Aces finished with 12 hits, three of them doubles — Cerda, Smith and Conticello each hit one off Whitman.

The game effectively ended in the first inning when Whitman needed 28 pitches to get through the frame, allowing a run and putting Reno ahead before Short had thrown a pitch. With a lead before he took the mound, Short attacked the zone with a 61% strike rate and never faced a runner past second base. Sacramento left only one runner in scoring position the entire night.

Manuel Pena, LF, Reno Aces — A 3-for-4 night with an RBI and a run scored. The 25-year-old raised his season average to .294 (60-for-204) across 50 games. His three-hit game was his sixth of the season.

Joe Whitman, LHP, Sacramento River Cats — Hard-luck loser despite 6 strikeouts and a quality start (6.0 IP, 3 R, 2 ER). He allowed nine hits but stranded six runners and kept the game within reach before the bullpen surrendered two insurance runs in the seventh.

The box score shows Sacramento out-hit Reno in average (.284 to .276) but the Aces won 5-0. The gap is explained by Reno's 5-for-12 with runners in scoring position versus Sacramento's 1-for-5. The River Cats also grounded into two double plays — both by catcher Zach Morgan — killing their only threatening rallies. Reno's defence was errorless; Sacramento shortstop Aeverson Arteaga committed a throwing error that contributed to an unearned run.

Reno's bullpen (Mercado, Sims, Campbell) combined for 4.0 scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out three. The four Aces pitchers combined for only three strikeouts — the lowest total in a Reno shutout this season — but also issued only two walks.

The win moved Reno to 56-72 on the season, while Sacramento dropped to 73-53. The River Cats remain firmly in first place in the PCL West but have now lost two straight. Reno — already eliminated from playoff contention — continues to evaluate younger arms like Short, who made an immediate case for a rotation spot heading into 2027.

Both teams continue their six-game series on Friday, August 29, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 PM PT at Greater Nevada Field.

A textbook pitching-and-clutch-hitting win for Reno. Short's debut was the story: no swing-and-miss dominance, but relentless efficiency against a lineup that came in averaging 5.4 runs per game. For Sacramento, Whitman deserved better, but an offence that managed eight hits and zero runs will need to convert in the series ahead.
