Las Vegas Aviators vs Sugar Land

Bottom 1st — Aviators strike fast. Dallas Keuchel, making a rehab start for Las Vegas, got immediate run support. Leadoff hitter Denzel Clarke crushed a solo home run to left on the first pitch he saw from Sugar Land starter Bryce Mayer, tying Clarke's second homer of the season at Triple-A. Later in the frame, Brayan Buelvas launched a three-run homer to centre, plating Jared Dickey and Cole Conn to make it 4-0 after one.

Top 2nd — Space Cowboys answer. Sugar Land halved the deficit in the second. Zach Dezenzo led off with a solo home run to left-centre, his fourth of the season. Two batters later, Lucas Spence — the No. 9 hitter — drove a 1-0 pitch over the wall for a two-run shot, scoring Zach Cole and pulling Sugar Land within 4-3.

Middle innings — Pitching settles. Both starters settled in after the early fireworks. Keuchel finished 6.2 innings, allowing three earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks — his longest outing of the year. Mayer struck out 10 across five innings but was saddled with four earned runs from the first-inning homers.

Top 8th — The dam breaks. With the Aviators still nursing a narrow lead, Keuchel departed and Las Vegas turned to its bullpen. Drew Rom recorded the final out of the seventh but was charged with a blown save after a run scored on an error. Then Wander Suero entered and chaos followed. The right-hander faced eight batters, walked three, surrendered three hits and was tagged for six earned runs while recording just two outs. Pascanel Ferreras delivered a two-run single, Jake Meyers punched a two-run double, and Zach Cole added a two-run single as Sugar Land poured on six runs in the frame, blowing the game open at 10-4.

Aviators fight back, fall short. Las Vegas scratched two runs in the bottom of the eighth off Brandon McPherson on an RBI single by Jared Dickey and a run-scoring hit from Colby Halter, but Ben Bowden surrendered one more in the top of the ninth on a Ferreras sacrifice fly. McPherson (3-2) earned the win with 3.2 innings of two-run relief, striking out five.

Suero's eighth-inning meltdown — six earned runs, three walks, three hits in 0.2 IP — turned a one-run game into a blowout. The Aviators' bullpen, which entered with a collective 5.30 ERA on the season, simply had no answer for a Sugar Land lineup that batted around and produced six hits with runners in scoring position in the inning alone.

3-for-5, HR, RBI, 2 R. Dezenzo set the tone for Sugar Land's comeback with a leadoff homer in the second and reached base three times, scoring twice. His hitting game score of 62 was the highest of any player on the night.

2-for-4, 2B, BB, 2 RBI, R, SB. Cole delivered a two-run single in the decisive eighth and also doubled, stole a base, and reached base three times.

1-for-3, HR, BB, 2 RBI, 2 R, SB. Spence's two-run homer in the second inning halved Sugar Land's early deficit and gave the Space Cowboys momentum they never relinquished.

3-for-4, BB, RBI, R. Dickey was the lone bright spot in the Aviators' lineup, reaching base four times and driving in a run.

5.0 IP, 4 ER, 10 K, 1 BB. Despite the crooked first inning, Mayer settled in spectacularly, striking out 10 — including six of the last nine batters he faced.

The strikeout gap (16 for Las Vegas pitchers vs. 6 for Sugar Land) tells the story of two bullpens moving in opposite directions. Sugar Land's trio of Mayer (10 K), McPherson (5 K) and VanWey (1 K) fanned 16 Aviators — tied for the second-most by Space Cowboys pitchers this season. Las Vegas pitchers, by contrast, issued five walks and managed only six strikeouts. The three Las Vegas errors (catcher Cole Conn throwing, right fielder Jared Dickey fielding, shortstop Drew Swift throwing) gifted Sugar Land extra outs in the pivotal eighth inning, where the Space Cowboys scored six runs with two outs.

Sugar Land's 6-for-19 mark with runners in scoring position looks modest but produced 10 RBI — a reflection of timely hitting rather than sheer volume. Las Vegas went 3-for-9 with RISP but stranded six, undone by the 16 strikeouts from their hitters.

For Las Vegas (75-56), this was a blip. The Aviators had already clinched a PCL playoff berth and entered with the league's second-best record. Clarke's rehab assignment from the Athletics continues to produce power (two homers in 11 games, slugging .588), while Keuchel's 6.2-inning, three-run effort was his best start since joining the Aviators. The bullpen, however, remains a concern — Suero's ERA climbed to 7.40, and the Aviators have now blown five of nine save opportunities.

Sugar Land (69-63) inched closer to .500 with the win and improved to 8-3 in their last 11 games in Las Vegas. After losing the first four games of the six-game series, the Space Cowboys have now taken the last two. They host the Albuquerque Isotopes next, while the Aviators travel to face the same Isotopes on Monday, August 31.

Las Vegas' playoff ticket is already punched, but this loss exposed the fragile bridge from starter to closer. Keuchel delivered a vintage, ground-ball-heavy start — seven groundouts, seven strikeouts-looking — but the bullpen coughed up eight runs in 2.1 innings. For Sugar Land, the combination of Dezenzo's breakout and McPherson's shutdown relief makes them a dangerous opponent as the PCL season winds down. A game that started with fireworks ended with a whimper for the home side as the bullpen door spun off its hinges.
